1. The presidential campaign of former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakarhas commenced in the South South ahead of the 2019 general elections. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Calabar on Friday, Zonal Coordinator for his supporters in the Zone, Comrade Godswill Matthew, urged youths in the Niger Delta region to support Atiku.
2. The Coalition of Niger Delta Agitators has said it will begin fresh attacks on oil installations in the Niger Delta as from September 10. It also stressed that the quit notice it issued to Hausas and Yorubas in the Niger Delta region stands.
3. A man identified as Friday Njoku, has killed himself after stabbing his 25-year-old girlfriend, Cynthia Nwafia, to death. The incident happened at the girl’s place at Number 5 Amachi street in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi state capital. The State’s Police Public Relations Officer, Loveth Oda, who disclosed the matter, explained that Njoku and Cynthia have been friends for some years and had already began marriage plans before the incident.
4. Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has sacked his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Idowu Adelusi. A statement by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, said Adelusi was sacked due to “dereliction of duty.” The statement was announced on the state-owned radio station, but did not provide further details on the offence the CPC committed.
5. Report says the Governing Council of the Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has sacked 10 lecturers and eight non-teaching junior staffs for extortion, sexual harassment and gross misconduct, among others. A statement by the university Registrar and Secretary to the University’s Senate, Daniel Urhibo, says 17 other staff were warned for plagiarism.
6. The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III has debunked that he was in support of the plan to attack the Igbos in the north. According to the monarch. Abubakar who made the remark in Sokoto when he received the world Igbo union leader, His Imperial Majesty (HIM) Sir Dr. Meshach, said he was against the ultimatum by the Arewa youths that Igbos should vacate the north by October.
7. Mrs. Oluchukwu Ajulufo, a journalist who worked with Ray Power (Daar Communications), has emerged the governorship candidate of Labour Party for the Nov. 18, governorship election in Anambra State. Ajulufo was nominated by unanimous vote of the 64-man delegate at the primary election in Awka on Saturday.
8. Nigerian Air Force on Saturday disclosed that it had foiled an attempt by Boko Haram to breach the peaceful Eid-el Kabir celebration in Borno.The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadiq Abubakar, stated this at a feast organized for officers and men of the service at the 105 Composite Group, Maiduguri. He disclosed that the Air Force in a joint operation with the army had destroyed insurgents’ hideouts thereby scuttling their plans to attack communities during the festivities.
9. Report says the The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has finally released details of the high profile cases in its possession to the office of the Attorney- General of the Federation and Minister of Justice. It comprised 103 high-profile cases. The list has top-ranking judicial officers, including a justice of the Supreme Court, a judge of the Federal High Court, and a sacked justice of the Court of Appeal. Some former governors, one of whom is currently serving as minister in the President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet, and others serving their terms in the Senate are all in the list.
10. Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has warned against the deployment of soldiers and police to the South East and South South, to arrest leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu. In a series of posts on Twitter on Saturday, Fani-Kayode claimed Kanu was bigger than President Muhammadu Buhari.
