1. The Northern Leaders, Livestock and Perishable Goods Market, and Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders’ Association of Nigeria, Enugu State chapter, on Saturday announced a two-day closure of livestock and perishable goods markets in the State. To this effect, they will not be open for business on Wednesday and Thursday next week. Within the period, the groups are to carryout sensitization visits to all the places of business and settlement of their members as part of their collaborative effort with the State Government and security agencies towards peace and security in the State.
2. Youth of apex Igbo social-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide on Saturday said it has taken the lead to build bridges across six geo-political zones to ensure the emergence of Igbo President come 2023. Ohanaeze youth said an alliance of the Eastern Region with the North will produce one of the present Southeast Governors and one present Northern Governor as a running mate, or a former Vice President or former Governor or Senator, depending on the choice of the North. The youth organization, in a statement signed by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, its President General and made available to DAILY POST on Saturday, also said that it was working towards ensuring a past Governor from the South East emerges as Nigeria’s first citizen.
3. Deputy Minority Leader of the Senate, Emmanuel Bwacha, on Saturday described the attack and killing of three policemen and a civilian by Nigeria Army as a “very embarrassing occurrence in the history of our country.” The lawmaker, who represents Taraba South in the National Assembly revealed that eye witnesses at the scene of the tragedy alleged that the bus conveying the detectives was chased by a private Sharon car and not that of the military. He said this while calling for the setting up of an Independent Panel of Inquiry to probe the incident which happened on the Ibi-Jalingo highway in Taraba State. Bwacha noted that this is a major allegation the panel of inquiry ought to investigate.
4. The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on Saturday said its Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation LAFIYA DOLE successfully destroyed a Boko Haram Terrorists’ (BHT) Command and Control Centre in Dusula, on the fringes of the Sambisa Forest in Borno. Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, who disclosed this in a statement to NAn on Saturday in Abuja, said the operation was conducted on Friday. Daramola said that this was sequel to a renewed offensive aimed at further eliminating remnants of Boko Haram and Islamic State of West Africa Province Terrorists (BHT/ISWAP) in the North-East of Nigeria.
5. Human rights lawyer, Olukoya Ogungbeje at the weekend, dragged the federal government before the Federal High Court over clampdown on ‘Revolution Now’ protesters who claimed to be demanding better governance in Nigeria. In a suit filed before Justice Chuka Obiozor of the Ikoyi Division of the Court, Ogungbeje, is praying the court “to order the police to release everyone in its detention.” He argued that protest is a guaranteed right of every Nigeria according to the constitution of the country. The lawyer joined the Department of State Services (DSS), Inspector-General of Police, and Attorney-General of the Federation in the ex parte suit on the violation of fundamental human rights. The lawyer told the court he was part of the protest but was barred along with other people in Lagos from carrying out their constitutional right.
6. Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, the leader of Coalition of Northern Groups, CNGs, at the weekend, said that it is of no benefit to the North to continue holding on to power in 2023. He also pointed out that the political alliance between the North and the South-West is not working. Suleiman said the North was indeed very angry with President Muhammadu Buhari’s government because they have not benefitted anything from him. He stated this while fielding questions on which region should produce the next President of the country come 2023. For him, the Presidency should shift to the South in 2023 since Northern leaders, including Buhari, have failed their people.
7. The Governor of Kaduna state, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai has called for the idea of zoning of political offices to be abandoned in favour of competence. El-Rufai offered his thoughts in a prologue titled, ‘Defeating a Determined Incumbent – The Nigerian Experience’, which he contributed to a book – Power of Possibilities and Politics of Change in Nigeria – written by the Director-General of the Progressives Governors’ Forum, Salihu Lukman. Ahead of the 2023 elections, there are already talks about the South producing the next president, with President Muhammadu Buhari from the North currently serving his second term.
8. Hoodlums yesterday broke into the grave of late business mogul, Olorogun Michael Ibru in Agbarha-Otor community, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State. 9. No fewer than One-Hundred and Twenty suspected cultists who were identified to be terrorizing the people of Ebonyi State have at the weekend denounced their membership. It was gathered that the said cultists who hail from the 13 Local Government Areas of the State, were told to converged at the State headquarters of the Christ Embassy church located at old Abakaliki- Enugu road. An eyewitness who spoke to newsmen and a prominent leader of the church said the suspected cultists willingly accepted to denounce their membership shortly after listening to the State Pastor of Christ Embassy church, Mrs. Eunice Oyeyemi.
10. Pastor Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer, Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has prophesied that Nigeria would come out great, march forward and overcome its numerous challenges. He made the prophetic declarations in his sermon at the 67 Holy Ghost Congress held at the Redemption Camp, KM 46, Lagos/Ibadan Expressway, however, urged Nigerians to return to God. Adeboye also declared, “There will be an end to emptiness, materially, spiritually and economically in Nigeria.”
