Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Sunday morning

1. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said it cannot be held responsible for the poor turnout of petitioners in Saturday’s verification of signatures for the recall of Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye. Alhaji Mohammed Haruna, the INEC Federal Commissioner in charge of Kogi, Kwara and Nasarawa States, stated this in Lokoja shortly after the exercise. Haruna said that the main concern of INEC was to ensure transparency in the process, insisting that the organisation was neutral in the bid to recall Melaye from the Senate.

2. Atiku Abubakar, has said he warned President Muhammadu he would quit the All Progressives Congress (APC), if the party was not restructured. He claimed Buhari failed to heed his warning or take his advice. He said APC started on a wrong footing after President Buhari assumed office.

3. Unknown armed bandits suspected to be from Utuma in Biase Local Government Area of Cross River State on Friday, allegedly invaded Isu communities in Arochukwu local government area of Abia State, killing ten people. Several houses were also burnt down during the attack.

4. A video has emerged of how the Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation LAFIYA DOLE on Friday destroyed a Boko Haram Terrorists (BHT) logistics base at Tumbum Gini in the northern axis of Borno. Air Vice Marshal Olatokunbo Adesanya, NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, made the announcement in a statement on Saturday.

5. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kogi State has allegedly accused the State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello of wasting over N5 billion public fund on his failed plot to recall the Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial district of the State, Dino Melaye. The party, which described Governor Yahaya Bello as, “heartless” lamented that the over N5billion would have paid at least two months salaries of workers in the State.

6. The bid to recall Senator Dino Melaye, lawmaker representing Kogi West Senatorial District, has failed as the verification exercise could not meet constitutional requirements. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC in the results released at the INEC office, Lokoja, in the early hours of Sunday said only 5.34% signatures was verified. The result was announced by the Resident Electoral Commissioner from Benue State, Professor Ukertor Gabriel.

7. No fewer than five persons were late Saturday night killed and over 20 others injured when suspected herdsmen attacked Tse Agagbe, in Sengev Council Ward of Gwer West LGA of Benue State. Report says the attackers stormed the village at about 9pm on Saturday and opened fire at residents of the area. Over 15 houses were reportedly set on fire during the attack.

8. Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo on Saturday declared that Nigerians should prepare their minds that it may not be easy to change the present government of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019. He, however, said that with Nigerians obtaining their PVC, the government can be dethroned.#

9. Twelve persons were on Saturday killed and five others sustained injuries in an accident involving a Volvo truck and a Ford bus at Foursquare area on Lagos /Ibadan Expressway. The accident was caused by wrongful overtaking on the part of the Ford passenger bus with registration number AAA 886 XR.

10. A national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bolaji Ahmed Tinubu, has admitted that lackof understanding of the difficult situation Nigeria is going through is the major cause of division among the people. Tinubu spoke at a book launch in honour of the Emir of Gwandu, Alhaji Muhammadu Illiasu Bashar held at the Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic, Birnin-Kebbi.
