1. The Super Eagles of Nigeria kicked of their World Cup campaign in Russia last night on a poor note after falling 2 – 0 to Croatia.
Etebo’s own goal and Modric’s penalty in the second half humbled the African side.
2. Local government election was held on Saturday in Rivers State with low turnout of voters.
The voter-apathy was attributed to bad weather as heavy downpour began early in the day.
3. Human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), on Saturday, restated his opposition to the sale of nomination forms to aspirants for elective offices by political parties.
Falana threatened to take legal action against political parties that were still selling nomination forms to aspirants despite previous court judgments prohibiting such payment.
4. Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it may need not deploy large number of security personnel to polling booths in the July 14 governorship election in Ekiti State.
The electoral umpire said this was possible if the achievements it recorded in recent elections, which it claimed the global community acknowledged to be largely transparent and credible, could be maintained.
5. There was pandemonium on Saturday in Wankya settlement of Zaki-Biam town, Ukum LGA of Benue State as gunmen suspected to be members of a wanted militia gang leader, Terwase Akwaza, invaded the area, killed two persons and abducted another.
It was gathered that the killers invaded the area around 11.30pm with guns and broke into the homes of the victims.
6. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has dismissed 24 of its personnel in the past two years over misconduct.
The authority said it has also lost about 10 personnel, while others suffered injuries – with some resulting in amputation, in the course of carrying out their duties.
7. Lagos State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in 2015, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, on Saturday, said integrity in Nigerian politics was at a price.
Agbaje, who spoke at a leadership seminar by the Latter Rain Assembly’s Mountain of Government and Politics in Lagos, recalled that the party forced him to lie during the governorship election in the state.
8. A faction of the All Progressives Congress in Ebonyi State, led by a former governorship candidate in the 2015 general elections, Senator Julius Ucha, has threatened to sue the party’s National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, and the National Working Committee over the inauguration of the state executives.
Ucha stated this in Abakaliki, the state capital, while X-raying the activities of the party with reference to the conduct of ward congresses on May 5, 2018, across states in the country.
9. Fighter jets of the Nigerian Air Force conducted air strikes on at least three Benue State communities on Saturday, in an operation which lasted several hours.
The NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Vice Marshal Olatokunbo Adesanya, said the Force would give details of the bombardment.
10. The nation has been plunged into partial darkness as the power grid recorded a collapse on Saturday morning.
The system collapse led to the shutdown of most of the nation’s power plants.
