Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Sunday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. A meeting of the North West Governors’ Forum held yesterday in Kaduna state. The meeting, which was held behind closed doors, had in attendance, the Governor of Katsina State, Aminu Masari and Deputy Governors of Kaduna, Jigawa and Sokoto states. Also in attendance at the meeting are the SSGs and Commissioners of Education and Agriculture from the seven north-west states. It was not disclosed whether 2019 elections formed part of their discussion.

2. President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki was in Rivers State on Saturday. He visited Governor Nyesom Wike at the Government House in Port Harcourt. Saraki was in the State to commission the Alternative Dual Carriageway from the Airport to Port Harcourt and East West Road. Saraki also laid the foundation stone of the Second Train of the Indorama Eleme Fertilizer Plant project in Eleme Local Government Area.

3. Leader of the Seriki in the Olubadan Chieftaincy line in Ibadanland, High Chief Adebayo Oyediji is dead. He died on Friday in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital. High Chief Oyedeji died at the age of 92. He died in a private hospital after a brief illness.

4. The leadership of the apex Igbo socio-political organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo and the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, have reconciled their differences. A peace meeting was brokered between the two bodies by the Chairman of the Igbo Leaders of Thought, ILT, Prof. Ben Nwabueze, SAN. The reconciliation means that the IPOB had stopped all forms of verbal attacks on the Igbo leaders.

5. Supporters of Senator Abdul Ningi and those of former FCT Minister, Senator Bala Mohammed clashed at the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) secretariat in Bauchi on Saturday. The youths supporters disrupted a PDP meeting following comments from Mohammed’s supporters against Ningi over 2019 election. The meeting had to be halted as the rivals resisted attempt by security personnel to calm them.

6. The Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose has announced a reward of N50,000 per night for teachers and the PDP youth detained by DSS, amounting to 250,000 per teacher. Fayose said he was rewarding those detained as part of his social security scheme. He said he was doing so because of his position to protect the oppressed.

7. A Lagos barber, identified as Ahmed, has died after he set himself ablaze on a road leading to Omole Estate, near Akiode Bus Stop. The barber had gone to the road around 4:30 pm on Wednesday holding a five-litre jerrycan of petrol. He poured the content on his body, struck a match and lit himself. He was later carried away by officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Services, but died around 5:00pm Friday in a hospital while receiving treatment.

8. The National Chairman of the Reformed All Progressives Congress, R-APC, Buba Galadima, has further boasted that he now had the power to ask the National Assembly to impeach anybody and it would be done immediately. He also lambasted the National Chairman of the APC for saying he doesn’t lose sleep over their departure from the party.

9. England on Saturday evening defeated Sweden 2.0 in the 2018 FIFA World Cup round of 16 encounter played at the Samara Stadium in Russia to qualify for the semi-final of the tournament. On the other hand, Russia was defeated 4.3 on penalty by Croatia to qualify for the semi-final.

10. President Muhammadu Buhari has reacted to the acquittal of Senate President, Bukola Saraki by the Supreme Court. President Buhari’s reaction which was contained in a statement on Saturday by his spokesman, Garba Shehu praised Saraki for allowing all judicial processes in his case until he got vindicated.
