Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Sunday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. President Muhammadu Buhari has lambasted HSBC for saying his second term would stunt the economy. A statement on Saturday by his spokesman, Garba Shehu, said a bank that soiled its hand with ‘‘milions of US dollars yet-to-be-recovered Abacha loot and continued until a few months ago to shield the stolen funds of one of the leaders of the Nigerian Senate has no moral right, whatsoever, to project that a “second term for Mr. Buhari raises the risk of limited economic progress and further fiscal deterioration.” Buhari challenged the HSBC to return Nigeria’s stolen fund immediately.

2. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Saturday, said the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government should be held responsible if anything happens to former Vice President Abubakar Atiku or any its presidential aspirants ahead of the 2019 general elections. PDP said this in reaction to the alleged threats to the life of the former Vice President, as well as similar threats and harassments of other presidential aspirants.

3. Report says the Economic Management Team, which is chaired by the Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, is expected to hold a special meeting on Tuesday to deliberate on the ongoing clamour for the increase in new minimum wage. The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, disclosed this to State House correspondents. Report has, however, claimed that the report of the committee would be submitted before September ending.

4. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) while commending the resignation of Kemi Adeosun from office as Minister of Finance has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of Adeosun for forging her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Exemption Certificate in addition to alleged impropriety and abuse of office as minister. This was contained in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan.

5.Kemi Adeosun has reportedly left Nigeria for the United Kingdom. The former minister left Nigeria a day after she resigned as the country’s Finance Minister over alleged NYSC certificate forgery.

6. The Commissioner for Rural Development in Bauchi State, Mahmood Abubakar is dead. His death was announced by Governor of the state, Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar, on Saturday. Governor Abubakar sympathized with his family over the death.

7. Six members of the Ondo State Executive Council have resigned following the directive by Governor Rotimi Akeredolu that all political appointees, who have obtained nomination forms to contest the forthcoming primary of the party, should do so. They include Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs Omowumi Olatunji; Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr Gboyega Adefarati; Commissioner for Land and Housing, Mr Donald Ojogor; Commissioner for Commerce, Mr Timehin Adelegbe; Special Adviser on Rural Development, Mr Victor Olabimtan; and Special Adviser on Health, Dr Jibayo Adeniyi.

8. Nigeria and 10 other emerging countries have been ranked among the non-outperforming economies in a new report by McKinsey Global Institute, the research arm of McKinsey and Company. Other non-outperforming economies include Argentina, Brazil, Egypt, Mexico, Pakistan, Poland, Russia, Philippines, South Africa and Turkey.

9. The youth wing of the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, has declared that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government is not sectional as being speculated in some quarters. President of the Forum, Yerima Shettima, has insisted that the Buhari government was not sectional because even the Northern part of the country was not “feeling any impact” of his administration.

10. Following the resignation of key players from his government ahead of the 2019 elections, Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha has appointed a new Secretary to the Government. Chief Mark Uchendu will officially replace Sir George Eche as the new SSG.
