Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Sunday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is currently leading in the results announced so far by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in the Saturday’s governorship election in Osun State.

From the results announced so far, Adeleke is ahead of his close challenger, Gboyega Oyetola, of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

2. No fewer than forty shops and eight houses were on Saturday completely burnt in a tanker fire accident in Make, Suleja Local Government Area of Niger state.

Although, no death recorded, four persons were said to have sustained severe burns.

3. The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the arrest of three persons suspected to be involved in vote-buying and selling in the Saturday’s governorship election in Osun State.

A statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood said the suspects Muriat Olalekan, a 61-year-old man of No 11, Oloya street and Hamzat Muniru a 65-year-old man of Molari compound, and a PDP chieftain Mr Adeagbo Wasiu, of ward 8 unit 9 Fiwasaye Area Osogbo were arrested for vote buying.

4. A former EFCC boss, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has formally declared his intention to challenge incumbent Governor Muhammadu Bindow for the 2019 Adamawa governorship ticket under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ribadu said Gov. Bindow has performed below expectation, as such the APC needs a new face to make a difference.

5. Former president, Goodluck Jonathan, has stated that only a man with the strength of character and clear conscience like Senator David Mark is needed to rebuild a fragmented and disunited Nigeria in 2019.

Playing host to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential hopeful in his Yenogoa home, Jonathan said Nigeria has never been so disunited than now, saying “we are only existing superficially and this is very dangerous.”

6. President Muhammadu Buhari will on Sunday depart for New York to participate in the 73rd Session of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA73) which officially opened on September 18, 2018.

Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, in a statement on Saturday, said the President’s presentation of Nigeria’s National Statement is expected to reaffirm the nation’s commitment to international peace and security; sustainable socio-economic development; disarmament and denuclearisation; youth and women empowerment; climate change; rule of law and human rights; among others.

7. The Taraba Police Command has killed three suspected armed robbers operating along the Bali-Garbabi highway in Taraba State.

The State Commissioner of Police, David Akinremi, in a statement on Saturday, said a locally-fabricated Brownie pistol, seven rounds of .75mm ammunition and criminal charms were recovered from the criminals.

8. Council chairman of Ohaukwu local government area of Ebonyi State, Barr. Clement Odoh at the weekend accused the All Progressives Congress, APC-led government of President Muhammadu Buhari of domesticating corruption in Nigeria.

Odoh, who made this known while interacting with journalists in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi state, equally alleged that Nigeria cannot survive another four years under the ruling APC government.

9. Attahiru Bafarawa, former Sokoto State Governor and People Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirant, has said President Muhammadu Buhari’s military background had made it difficult for him to handle issues on democratic governance.

Bafarawa, who spoke on Saturday in Jos, at a meeting with PDP supporters in Plateau, stated that only a true democrat could deliver sound leadership and solve Nigeria’s development problems.

10. Nigerian-born Anthony Joshua retained his International Boxing Federation (IBF), World Boxing Association (WBA) and World Boxing Organisation (WBO) heavyweight titles, with a seventh-round stoppage of Alexander Povetkin at Wembley Stadium in London on Saturday.

A previously close contest turned in Joshua’s favour decisively, when he sent the Russian crashing to the canvas, with a straight right hand and left hook.
