Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Sunday morning

1. The management of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has countered the claims of violation of public trust against it by the House Of Representatives Committee on Emergency and disaster preparedness with ‘hard facts.’

The agency said the findings by the committee against the agency did not reflect facts placed before it.

2. The Nigerian Military has claimed that it has killed one of the leaders of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), the Boko Haram factional group believed to have abducted Leah Sharibu.

A statement from the Nigerian Army on Saturday, revealed that the ISWAP media chief, Ahmad Sale, was neutralised in an operation by own troops in conjunction with personnel of the Nigerian Air Force.

3. The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Raheem Olawuyi on Saturday was declared the winner of the Ekiti/Irepodun/Isin/Oke-Ero Federal Constituency bye-election held across the four councils in Kwara.

The Returning Officer for the election, Prof. Abimbola Adesoji announces the final results.

4. The All Progressive Congress (APC Chairman in Cross River State, Dr. Mathew Achigbe is dead.

Achigbe died Saturday morning in a fatal motor accident.

5. A socio-cultural group, Igbo World Union, IWU, has taken a swipe at some Igbo leaders over their endorsement of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, for the upcoming 2019 election in the country.

Reacting on the development at a press conference held on Saturday afternoon, in Umuahia, the Abia state capital, the President General of IWU, Mishak Nnanta, said both President Muhammadu Buhari and Atiku stood the chance of winning bloc votes from the south east zone if any of them met their demands.

6. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will on Sunday lift the ban on campaign for the 2019 presidential and National Assembly elections slated for February 16, 2019.

A statement by Mr Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, INEC’s Director of Voter Education and Publicity, on Saturday in Abuja to NAN said that political parties who fielded candidates for both elections would commence campaigns across the country.

7. The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is to kick-start his campaign for 2019 general election through an address to Nigerians on Facebook on Monday.

A statement issued by the Atiku Presidential Campaign Organisation, on Saturday in Abuja, said that Abubakar would use the address to launch his policy document.

8. Shehu Sani, the Senator representing Kaduna Central has frowned at the viral reports that ‘real’ President Muhammadu Buhari is ‘dead’.

9. A former gubernatorial aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna State, Dr Muhammad Sani-Bello, has formally joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Sani-Bello dumped the PDP on Nov. 12, due to what he described as unending mistrust between him and the state leadership of the party, and its governorship candidate, Alhaji Isa Ashiru.

10. Nigeria drew 1-1 with South Africa on Friday to qualify for the 2019 African Cup of Nation. Nigeria garnered 10 points to qualify for the tournament for first time in five years.
