Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Sunday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. The Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria, BOSAN, has resolved to fight the Federal Government led by President Muhammadu Buhari to a standstill over the trial of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen and the President of Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Paul Usoro, SAN. The body held an emergency meeting at the conference room of Nigeria Law School, Lagos on Saturday.

2. President Muhammadu Buhari of the APC and Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, Saturday night, shunned the presidential debate which held in Abuja ahead of the 2019 elections. While President Buhari did not show up at the venue, Atiku Abubakar, the candidate of the PDP was at the event, but later walked out when he got information that Buhari was not attending the debate.

3. President Muhammadu Buhari has explained that he failed to show up at the presidential debate which held on Saturday night due to his other commitments, especially an earlier debate which was transmitted live via the social media. He said he had interacted with a lot of Nigerians via that channels and had provided satisfactory answers to their questions.

4. Similarly, Atiku Abubakar, in his own explanation on why he walked out of the venue, said he was at the venue to be sure the president would participate in the debate as his target was on his bad government. Atiku said he could only debate with Buhari face to face and not in his absence. He challenged Buhari to another debate anytime, anywhere, while also apologizing to the organizers and the three other contestants at the debate.

5. In their reactions to the absence of Buhari and Atiku from the presidential debate on Saturday, the three other contestants – Fela Durotoye, Oby Ezekwesili, Kingsley Moghalu said it was a powerful statement by the two contestants that they were not qualified to run in the election.

6. The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Taraba State has accused Gov. Ishaku Darius of the state of allegedly arming political thugs across the state as part of PDP’s plans to disrupt the 2019 elections. Addressing newsmen in Jalingo on Saturday, the Director-General of the APC governorship candidate in the state, Mr Bobboi Kaigama, also alleged that such arms were distributed across the state and were being used freely by the hired goons. This follows an alleged attack on the envoy of Nigeria to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Amb. Hassan Ardo, and APC governorship candidate, Alhaji Sani Danladi, on Thursday in Wukari.

7. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of planning to accommodate the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the general elections in Rivers State.

PDP said its position was predicated on the unacceptable and compromising suggestion by INEC, through its National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, that certain circumstances could lead to the postponement of election, in Rivers State, to accommodate the APC, which currently do not have candidates in the elections.

8. The Young Progressives Party, YPP, has described call by the Federal Government for the resignation of Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen, as hypocritical. In a statement on Saturday in Abuja, National Publicity Secretary of YPP, Mr. Olawale Egbeola, advised the presidency to allow the rule of law take its course without interference.

9. A former Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has declared that President Muhammadu Buhari will win the presidential election within three hours of voting. The former Governor also claimed that Akwa Ibom would be the first state Buhari will win on February 16. The lawmaker spoke in an interview with journalists in Uyo.

10. The Federal Road Safety Corps has confirmed that about four people died while eight others were seriously injured in a fatal auto crash along Bauchi-Dass road on Saturday.
