Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Sunday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. The Northern Youths Movement, NYM, has warned leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in the north to be mindful of an alleged plot by the party’s National Leader, Bola Tinubu to snatch power from President Muhammadu Buhari before 2023 so as to pave way for his presidential ambition. In a statement on Saturday, the group alleged that Tinubu was already aware that with President Buhari in power till 2023, his presidential ambition can never be realized and now plotting to orchestrate Buhari’s impeachment latest by 2022 if he remained healthy till then.

2. The police in Anambra State have announced the arrest of the suspected kidnapper and murderer of an 85-year-old man, Pa Iloanyusi identified as the father of ex-Super Eagles player, Chikelu Iloanyusi. Pa Iloanyusi was kidnapped and murdered by one Ikechukwu Emilie, a notorious kidnapper terrorizing Anaku and Otoucha axis in Anambra State in 2014, five years ago.

3. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has assured candidates of the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) that results would be ready as from April 29. The Board’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dr Fabian Benjamin, disclosed this on Saturday in Bwari. Benjamin said that screening of the results would soon be over.

4. The Southeast caucus of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has demanded a review of the zoning arrangement ahead of the inauguration of the 9th National Assembly. The zone took the stand during a stakeholders meeting held in Enugu on Saturday. The meeting presided over by the National Vice Chairman of the party, Southeast, Chief Emma Eneukwu, had in attendance minister of Science and Technology, Chief Ogbonnaya Onu, his labour counterpart, Dr. Chris Ngige, former Gov. and senator-elect, Dr. Orji-Uzo Kalu, former minister, Chief Emeka Worgu, serving and incoming members of the National Assembly, among others.

5. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State has rejected claims that the state government’s inability to pay salaries and pensions arrears was as a result of the clampdown on some state’s accounts by the Economic Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corruption Practices and other related Offences Commission (ICPC). The state PDP, through its Secretary, Nze Ray Emeana, weekend told reporters that although the clampdown was a welcome development, it was not responsible for the non-payment of pension and salary arrears, alleging that the money meant for that purpose had been released to the state government.

6. Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, has inaugurated committees to investigate the activities of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders and his appointees during the just-concluded 2019 general elections. Dickson, who was represented by his Deputy and Central Chairman of the committees, Rear Admiral John Jonah, said they have one week to complete the assignment.

7. Angola defeated Nigeria 2-1 on Saturday, to claim the bronze medal at this year’s U-17 Africa Cup of Nations in Tanzania. Nigeria went behind after a fine strike from top scorer of the tournament, Capita, before Wisdom Ubani levelled the scores. Andre Sebastio Zito then netted the winning goal for the Angolans three minutes after the break.

8. Barcelona has been crowned LaLiga champions after 1-0 win over Levante. Lionel Messi netted the only goal in the Saturday night encounter. Ernesto Valverde had dropped the Argentine maestro for the visit of Levante but was forced to use him from the bench in the second half, as the game proved to be tougher than expected. The win means Barca now have a nine-point lead over second-placed Atletico Madrid, who beat Real Valladolid earlier in the day.

9. Nine Nigerians have been arrested in the United States over allegations of fraud. Geoffrey Berman, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and James Spero, Special Agent in Charge of the Tampa, Florida, Field Office of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), announced this in a statement. The suspects were arrested for allegedly defrauding businesses and individuals of more than $3.5 million through business email compromises, a Russian oil scam, and a romance scam.

10. A civil rights organization, Coalition Against Corruption and Bad Governance (CACOBAG), has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately order an investigation into the appointment of Ms. Aisha Abba Kyari, as an Assistant Vice President at the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA). The chairman of CACOBAG, Alhaji Toyin Raheem in a statement on Saturday described the appointment as controversial “because it violates set procedure at the NSIA, which is the legally constituted agency that manages Nigeria’s excess crude oil revenues.”
