Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Sunday morning

Good morning! Here are 10 things you need to know this morning:

1. The Afenifere Renewal group has said that some of the problems confronting Nigeria today started from President Olusegun Obasanjo’s era. It however said that Nigeria’s problems largely resulted from the poor leadership of President Goodluck Jonathan. The group’s Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kunle Famoriyo, said this in statement.

2. Former Head of State and presidential flag bearer of the leading opposition party, All Progressives Congress, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.) has said that Nigerians will definitely witness the end of terrorism, saying that the people are united against terrorism. Buhari was reacting to the recent bomb blast in Kano.

3. Many were reportedly killed yesterday in Akure, the Ondo state capital when a gas explosion hit the town. The incident occurred at about 7pm, killing many people, destroying vehicles and other property.

4. Nigeria’s First Lady, Patience Jonathan has said that she is throwing her weight behind Nyesom Wike to become the next Rivers state governor because he(Wike) was interested in developing the state, and rescuing it from those who are almost plundering it. Mrs Jonathan was speaking during the burial of Senator Tari James Sekibo, at Okirika, on Saturday.

5. Report says Nigeria and the United States have continued to severe their relationship as a fresh allegation against the US government says the recent mutiny by Nigerian soldiers was as a result of the ‘negative teachings’ by US trainers. The report says the US government was not sincere in its effort to support the war against terror in Nigeria.

6. A federal High Court sitting in Abuja has threatened action against the National Chairman of the PDP over the party’s poor handling of Oyo primaries election. The order dated December 9, 2014, cautioned that unless the party obeys the directions contained in the ruling instituted by the party’s House of Assembly aspirant, Mr Adelowo Ademola, they would be guilty of contempt of court and will be imprisoned.

7. The Nigerian Army has assured that the 2015 elections would be held under a peaceful atmosphere as it is committed to safeguarding lives and property during the elections. The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig. Gen. Olajide Laleye disclosed this to journalists, affirming the Army’s readiness if called to duty during the elections.

8. The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, says insurgency has taken over some parts of the country due to the insincerity on the part of some Nigerians as they have refused to speak the truth. Oritsejafor stated this at the Northern States Christian Elders Forum(NOSCEF) Traditional Rulers Conference 2014, in Abuja,

Protest has greeted the alleged purchase of 6 warships by ex-Niger Delta militant, Tompolo as a group, the Warri Study Group (WSG) has asked President Goodluck Jonathan to terminate a Federal Government contract awarded to Global West Vessel Service having being linked to the ex-militant leader, saying such link was a threat to national security.

10. The governor of Niger State, Dr Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, has said that the Boko Haram insurgents were clearly against the teaching of Islam, blaming those who have referred to them as Islamic group. Aliyu was speaking yesterday in Bida at the 29th edition of the state quranic recitation competition.
