Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Sunday morning

Good morning! Here are 10 things you need to know this morning:

1. The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council on Saturday raised the alarm over alleged plans by President Goodluck Jonathan and his party, the Peoples Democratic Party to frustrate the APC campaign and its Presidential flag bearer, General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), by grounding the aircraft of party stalwarts as well as freezing their accounts. The party’s Director Media and Publicity of the campaign, Mr. Garba Shehu, in Abuja disclosed this in a statement.

2. Report says the Federal Government has quietly shortlisted four INEC Commissioners that will likely take over from Prof. Attahiru Jega as the Chairman of the Commission. Report further reveals that Jega may be asked to proceed on three months’ terminal leave any moment from now.

3. The opposition All Progressives Congress, has rubbished the claim by the Presidential Campaign Organisation of the Peoples Democratic Party that one of its leaders, Bola Tinubu agreed with Osibanjo through an oath to take over as Vice president after six months in power. The party said the claim was designed to take people’s attention from the great outing of Gen. Buhari at the Chatham House in London last Thursday.

4. There was confusion at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport following a bomb drill which took place on Saturday morning. Report says after the bomb alarm was heard at the airport and an announcement was made, passengers at different points of the airport were seen running out of the terminal building. However, the security operatives were equal to the task as they responded well to customers’ fear.

5. A lawyer, Mr. Akinola Ajayi, has alleged that in the process of looking for Capt. Koli who revealed the Ekiti rigging tape, the military had detained and chained one Adamu Koli, the younger brother of the officer. He alleged that the boy was held in solitary confinement just to reveal where his brother was.

6. The Director of Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade, has disclosed that some Boko Haram insurgents were on Friday overpowered and killed by troops during a military operation along Djimillo-Damaturu, Yobe State. He said the terrorists hideout was discovered by soldiers near a market before the military began its operation.

7. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has said that the use of card reader in the coming election will not disenfranchise Nigerians as those who may have issues with the authentication of their fingerprints by the card readers, will be given a second chance to vote through other required proofs.

8.A women, Mrs. Bukola Olusegun has been arrested by the Police for setting her husband on fire in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital. She allegedly set her husband ablaze for not taking her out on Valentine’s Day.

9. Former Vice-President and All Progressives Congress presidential aspirant, Atiku Abubakar, has advised Nigerians not to give in prayers for the 43 schoolboys killed at the Federal Government College, Buni Yadi, Yobe State, and the 200 schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram in Chibok, Borno State last year. Atiku gave this advice on his facebook page to remember these victims of insurgents.

10. Pro-democracy groups that assembled yesterday at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park, Ojota, Lagos, have vowed to resist any attempt by the Jonathan administration to further shift the March and April elections or the use military in the electoral conduct as well as any other plan by the government that will jeopardize the nation’s electoral process.
