1. It was celebration yesterday as Godwin Obaseki of the All Progressives Congress, APC, was sworn-in as the Governor of Edo State. He was sworn in by the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Cromwell Idahosa at about 12:20pm. His deputy, Philip Shuaibu, also took his oath of office yesterday.
2. The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has raised the alarm of an ongoing plan to arrest some senior judges in the state. The Governor said one of the targets of the arrest was the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Adama Lamikanra Iyaye. He disclosed this in his speech to mark the commencement of the 2016-2017 Legal year in the state, alleging that some unknown armed men were seen in the home of the Chief Judge of the state last week.
3. Edo state governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, has expressed hope that he would reclaim his mandate as the duly elected governor, affirming that Obaseki of the APC who took the oath of office yesterday will be governors for a very short time.
4. Nigeria, continues to remain on top of its group in the ongoing World Cup qualifier as it defeated Algeria 3-1 in Uyo, Akwai Ibom State. Two goals from Victor Moses and a goal from Mikel Obi were enough to give the Super Eagles the needed victory against the Algerians.
5. A report has claimed that the United States government has frustrated the effort of the Federal Government to purchase an aircraft in continuation of its fight against Boko Haram. The report claimed that the A-29 Super Tucano light attack aircraft which was to be acquired from Brazil has been blocked, frustrating the Nigerian government that had been in talk with the Brazilian government over the said transaction.
6. The Nasarawa State police command on Saturday arrested a 25-year-old man, Mr. Oyin Osaba, for allegedly killing his biological mother, 75-year-old Mrs. Diji Osaba, following a disagreement in Amba village, Kokona Local Government Area of the state. The State Commissioner of Police, Abubakar Sadiq Bello, said the command also apprehended another Adamu Iyanga for killing his mother.
7. Group of supporters of the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, on Saturday, staged a peaceful protest against the alleged sidelining of the APC chieftain in the country. Led by the APC Chairman in Lagos, Henry Ajomale, the protest march tagged, “I stand with Tinubu,” moved from the Lagos State House of Assembly Complex in Alausa to other parts of Ikeja.
8. Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, on Saturday, said those requesting or giving him definite date to tear his green card over Donald Trump’s victory should go back to school as he cannot be browbeaten into fixing a definite date for the tearing of his card. He, however, said he would take action when he wishes to do so.
9. The Presidency has described as false media reports that it paid $21 million ransom for the release of the Chibok girls, stressing that the success achieved so far in the fight against insurgency in the North-East was largely due to the effort of the military. It equally denied that the resurgence of Boko Haram activities was as a result of the release of the 21 girls. The presidency made the denial through its spokesman, Mallam Garba Shehu.
10. Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has said President Muhammadu Buhari does not have the requisite ideas to revive the country’s economy. He also said the All Progressives Congress, APC, would soon disintegrate because it was founded on deceit. Fayose said this while marking his 56th birthday on Tuesday.
