1. The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, escaped death on Saturday as the building of Reigners’ Bible Church Int’l Inc, along Uyo Village Road, Uyo, the state capital, collapsed during a special program of the church. While some newspapers have reported that over 200 were killed in the incident, others reported that at least, 50 died in the collapsed building. Some dignitaries in company of the governor were said to have lost their lives while others sustained injuries.
2. Mr Austin Okojie, a Supervising Resident Electoral Commissioner Saturday announced osthe suspension of re-run legislative election in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State following complaint by Ad-hoc staff and corps members that materials got in late. The election will now hold today.
3. President Muhammadu Buhari’s family, yesterday disown some photographs trending in the social media as pre-wedding photographs of their daughter, Zahra, and Mohammed Indimi. In a statement by the Special Assistant on Media to the wife of the President, Adebisi Olumide-Ajayi, the family described the photographs as untrue and embarrassing to them, saying the wedding would remain a private affair.
4. There are reports that the rerun election in Rivers State was Saturday, marred by violence following cases of ballot box snatching, and the killing three persons by men believed to be SARS police. A report claimed that at Saint Pius, Ward 3, in Bodo, some operatives believed to be Special Anti-Robbery Squad stormed the polling units, shooting sporadically, killing 25-year-old Meebara Kormaga. Two others were reportedly killed.
5. A report says until the Super Falcons are paid their outstanding allowance, they will remain in their hotel in Abuja protesting. According to the report, the players have vowed to spend Christmas protesting if they are not paid.
6. The Federal Government has said that the conversion of its financial statement from the cash accounting to the international Public Sector Accounting Standards have resulted into an unrecorded liability of N2.2tn to contractors. It was disclosed that those who are heavily owed are contractors such as oil marketers, exporters, electricity distribution companies and others. The Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, stated this during the annual dinner of the Lagos Business School in Lagos.
7. Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Caretaker Committee, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, has accused the Senator Ali Modu Sheriff’s faction of the party of plotting to turn the nation into a one-party state in an alleged support for the All Progressives Congress. Makarfi raised the allegation in Kaduna while addressing some journalists.
8. A report has surfaced that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has submitted an official report to the Independent National Electoral Commission on the 100 electoral officials who allegedly received part of the $115m (N23bn) disbursed on the instruction of a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, during the build-up to the 2015 presidential election. The report claims that some of the indicated officials may face dismissal.
9. Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has accused the Nigerian Army and the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, of hijacking electoral materials and working to deliver a particular candidate in Rivers South-East Senatorial District. The governor added that no matter the use of the Nigerian Army and SARS personnel by the APC Government, Rivers State would never be conquered. He alleged that there were mass shootings by the Nigerian Army and the Police in Khana, Gokana, Akuku-Toru and Etche Local Government Areas.
10. Report has it that a police station under construction has been demolished at Mkpunando in Anambra East Local Government Area, by suspected hoodlums from the neighbouring Enugu-Otu community over land dispute. The Anambra State police command has confirmed the incident.
