Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Sunday morning

Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers

1. President Muhammadu Buhari has assured Nigerians that the change promised by his government will begin to manifest in the New Year.

Buhari in his New Year’s message expressed optimism that the change Nigerians yearned for would manifest more and would be sustained in different sectors this year.

2. The Police have set up a mobile police base in Kafanchan to curb the ongoing violence in southern part of Kaduna state.

The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, who made this revelation during a visit to the area, said a panel has been set up to investigate reports that 800 people were killed in the area.

3. Suspended House of Representatives member, Abdulmumin Jibrin, has claimed that Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, collected $600,000 from former Delta State Governor, James Ibori. Jibrin made these claims via a series a of tweets on Saturday.

4. Elder statesman and former Governor of the old Anambra State, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, has stated that the Igbo people want fairness, not special treatment in Nigeria. According to him, President Buhari once announced that he is “nobody’s somebody and everybody’s nobody”, noting that, not only the Igbo or Yoruba leaders, but Hausa and Fulani leaders are also talking about the nepotism of the President.

5. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has debunked the reports that its Chairman, Ibrahim Magu, has been fired from office.

The anti – graft agency in a terse statement its twitter handle @officialEFCC, on Saturday wrote: “Guardian Newspaper Lied, Magu not sacked.”

6. President Muhammadu Buhari has recalled that his refusal to devalue the naira and increase fuel price during his time as Military Head of State in 1984-1985, led to his overthrow. He reaffirmed his resolve not to devalue the naira or increase the price of fuel on Friday night, during the 2016 regimental dinner organized by the presidential brigade of guards.

7. Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has said Nigerians are suffering but must put their hope in God to overcome their situation.

In his New Year message to Nigerians, Atiku described the outgoing 2016 as a challenging year, which ended on a high note.

8. Former President of the Senate, Senator David Mark has called on the current administration to review and strengthen its agenda towards addressing the unabating issues of hunger, poverty and insecurity in order to get the nation out of the woods in 2017.

Senator Mark urged Nigerians not to despair on the account of the Socio-Economic and security challenges, which had led to the incessant farmers/herdsmen clashes as well as ethno- religious conflicts.

9. Rev. Paul Enenche of the Dunamis International Gospel Centre has released declarations for the year 2017.

The preacher, while prophesying at the cross over service, monitored by our reporter at the Dunamis headquarters, Abuja, affirmed that the Lord will expose every individual with a negative agenda and conspiracy towards this entity called Nigeria.

10. The Nasarawa State Police Command has picked up five people for allegedly killing a Chinese miner and three others in the state.

The suspects were arrested following security intelligence sharing and collaboration with other agencies since the killing which happened on November 28.
