Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Sunday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. The Gambia ousted leader, Yahya Jammeh, Saturday flew out of the country after he agreed to step down and hand over to President Adama Barrow. His decision has consequently reduced the rising tension in the country over the possible outbreak of civil war. Jammeh took off in an unmarked plane heading for an unspecified destination. He was escorted by some dignitaries and soldiers.

2. Rumours that President Muhammadu Buhari had died at a German hospital is not true. The rumour was refuted by both Special Advisers to the President, Femi Adesina and Garba Shehu who said the president was well and alive. They, however, wished those who wish the president well and prayed for those who wish him dead to repent of their evil ways. The presidency also said President Buhari who flew to London after taking his leave couldn’t have been in a London and in Germany at the same time.

3. Nigerian troops have killed 15 members of the Boko Haram terrorists, who were part of insurgents who made the Nigerian Air Force to mistakenly attack IDPs camp in Rann, Borno State. Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, disclosed this when he paid an operational visit to troops of 3 Battalion on Friday. He said troops also captured one terrorist, suspected to be a foreigner.

4. Some policemen, Saturday morning, allegedly shot at some students of the Osun State University while playing football. The incident happened at the Oke Baale area of Osogbo, the Osun State capital. Two students were hit by the bullets during the attack. This, however, resulted to a violent protest by students of the University.

5. Nduese Essien, a former Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, has disclosed that the Peoples Democracy Party (PDP) will soon recover its mandate from the defected PDP senator, Nelson Effiong, who has now crossed to the APC. He was speaking during an enlarged stakeholders’ meeting of Eket Senatorial District on Saturday to deliberate on the recent political development in the district.

6. Former minister of petroleum resources, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke has denied allegations that were made recently by the EFCC regarding the sum of $153m forfeiture, saying she couldn’t have forfeited what in the first place was not her own. She also said no evidence was provided to prove she owned the said amount, and that she had not been served any of such order by the EFCC.

7. Despite the current power cut nationwide, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola SAN, has promised a steady power supply in 2017. Fashola, stated this while making his Opening Address as Guest Speaker at the January edition of the Nextier Power Dialogue on Saturday. He said policies were being made to help realise a deepening of metering, sanctions for energy theft and better contract performance from Operators in the Power Sector. He said government was working assiduously to address the current power problem.

8. The National Chairman, phase II of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, self-styled ‘Gen’ Aso Tambo, has cried out over the delay in the payment of stipends owed Niger Delta ex-militants by the federal government. He made the complaint while dddressing newsmen shortly after self-styled ‘Gen’ Stephen Ebisintei was returned unopposed as Chairman of Bayelsa State chapter of phase II of the amnesty programme.

9. Wayne Rooney, Saturday came from the bench to score a spectacular free-kick goal in added time against Stoke City in their 1-1 draw. With the goal, Rooney has now broken Sir Bobby Charlton’s record and is now Manchester United’s all-time top scorer.

10. The Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II has refuted a newspaper report in which he was quoted to have ordered the Coordinator of the Odu’a Peoples Congress (OPC), Otunba Gani Adams to vacate his position. Oba Ogunwusi in a statement through his Media and Public Affairs ,Comrade Moses Olafare, described Gani Adams as an unapologetic loyalist of Ooni’risa who has invested so much of resources into the socio-cultural emancipation of Oodua race and can only be treated with a deserved reciprocation of love and respect.
