Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Sunday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore yesterday, called on its members to defend themselves against ethnic militia attacks in the south region of the country. The umbrella body for Fulani herdsmen maintained that herders have constitutional right to movement across the federation and would not give it up out of fear. The group further warned politicians against politicising the spate of killing across the country amid growing tension generated by the RUGA altercation between the northern societies and other ethnic groups in the country.

2. Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders’ Association (MACBAN) on Saturday condemned the call credited to its sister group, the Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, which urged herders to defend themselves against attacks by ethnic militia in the southern region. The MACBAN National Secretary, Baba Usman, said his organisation was shocked to read media reports that said a leader of Kautal Hore had asked Fulani herders to retaliate any attack or attempt to restrict them in southern Nigeria.

3. Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, on Saturday, held consultations with the Akarigbo of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, as well as other monarchs in Ogun. The consultations were on the way out of the security challenges currently confronting Nigeria. He said the meeting was on the instruction of President Muhammadu Buhari.

4. Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria yesterday elected Rev. Sam Aboyeji as its new General Overseer. Aboyeji was the Midwest Region Overseer of the church until his election. He was elected at the Ajebo Camp of the church along Lagos Ibadan-Expressway. He won with 1,670 votes to 672 scored by Rev. Isaac Komolafe, who is the overseer over the Northern region of the church.

5. Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, yesterday called on the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Government to abolish the movement of Fulani herdsmen from the Northern region to the Southern part of the country. Speaking in reaction to bloody clashes between Fulani herders and farmers, he said that only the establishment of Ruga settlement for Fulani herdsmen across the country would solve the security issue.

6. The Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, on Saturday, alleged that those who claimed to have brought him into power are offended that he refused to share state funds with them. He stated this while hinging the crisis rocking the State House of Assembly on his refusal to share public funds with private individuals who claimed they brought him into power.

7. Vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the last election, Peter Obi, yesterday said that the chances of the party taking over the reigns of power in the country were still very bright. Obi said all hope was not lost as the party had a good case at the tribunal which was still on. He said election in Nigeria was not easy, adding that after the election, one had to go to court and queue up.

8. The Nigeria Police, yesterday invited Popular Nigerian singer, Timi Dakolo for questioning over a case of criminal conspiracy and falsehood. It was gathered that police officers were from the office of the Inspector-General were sent to deliver a letter of invitation to Dakolo. The letter was signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Kolo Yusuf, asking the singer to report for questioning on the 23rd of July, 2019.

9. Relatively, popular Nigerian singer, Timi Dakolo, has accused Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo of Commonwealth of Zion Assembly of bribing security officials to cover his crimes. He raised the alarm of how Fatoyinbo allegedly bribed officials investigating alleged rape case and consistently harassed his family. The singer, however, vowed to protect his family no matter the cost while declaring war with Coza Pastor.

10. President Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday, strongly condemned the killing of 37 innocent people by bandits in the Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State. He also commiserated with the victims of the unfortunate attacks, the government and people of Sokoto State. The President vowed to respond fiercely to the killing of innocent Nigerians by bandits.
