Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Sunday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. Violence broke out on Saturday at the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election which held at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, to select Local Government chairmanship candidates. Fight broke out in different corners, minutes after the Party’s electoral chairman, Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi began to announce “consensus” candidates already endorsed by the party.

2. Arsenal Saturday defeated Chelsea 2-1 to win the 2017 FA Cup. Alexis Sanchez fired Arsene Wenger’s men into the lead in the five minutes, but Chelsea equalized in the second half. Victor Moses’ red card helped Arsenal to score yet again to seal a victory at the end.

3. Acting President Professor Yemi Osinbajo has made 9 appointments into different Federal parastatals, Agencies and Commissions in the country. While some of the appointments approved by the Acting President are subject to confirmation by the Senate, others take immediate effect. Check site to get details of appointment.

4. The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of running a government of terror. Fayose said Buhari was going after Igbo leaders in the opposition by scheming to silence them through harassment and intimidation.

5. Report says kidnappers of six pupils of Igbonla Model College, Epe, Lagos State, have contacted some parents of the victims, and placed a demand of N1bn ransom to release them. According to the report, the parents were contacted on Saturday and allowed to briefly speak with their children.

6. Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, says Senator Dino Melaye and others asking him to resign are jokers. Bello through his Director General on Media, Kingsley Fanwo, called his opponents jokers, saying they were exaggerating things to score political goals.

7. The Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra, on Saturday, raised the alarm over the directive issued to policemen by the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, on the sit-at-home protest planned by pro-Biafra activists to mark the Biafra Day on May 30. MASSOB leader, Uchenna Madu, said the IG’s directive was unnecessary since the sit-at-home protest would be a peaceful exercise.

8. The Police in Ebonyi on Saturday confirmed the arrest of some members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in various part of the state for alleged unlawful sensitisation programme. The command’s spokesman, DSP Jude Madu, said on Saturday that the arrested suspects also included members of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB).

9. The member, representing Ikwuano/Umuahia constituency in the Federal House of Representatives, Chief Sam Onuigbo has insisted that the National Assembly is empowered by the Constitution of Nigeria to either increase or reduce any budget before it. This came as the lawmaker faulted the recent statement credited to human right lawyer, Femi Falana where he accused the lawmakers of illegally increasing the 2017 budget presented by President Muhammadu Buhari.

10. Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige has asked the Igbos to begin to prepare for 2019 general elections now. Ngige warned the Igbos against there repeating the mistake in 2016, when they put their eggs in one basket by voting for just the incumbent President, Goodluck Jonathan..
