1. Odion Ighalo netted an impressive hat-trick, as Nigeria defeated Libya 4-0 in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, played at the Akwa Ibom International Stadium in Uyo. The Super Eagles came into the game needing victory, to solidify their position in Group E and topple the visitors. Ighalo opened scoring from the penalty spot in the first half, which ended 1-0. He scored a brace in the second half before Samuel Kalu fired in the fourth in the dying minutes of the game.
2. South-East Governors on Saturday expressed shock over Alhaji Atiku Abubakar’s choice of Peter Obi as his running mate for the 2019 presidential election without being consulted. Their position was made known by the Chairman of the South East Governors’ Forum and governor of Ebonyi State, Chief David Umahi in Enugu. He said they will be meeting with the presidential candidate anytime soon.
3. The Federal Government has banned no fewer than 50 persons from travelling abroad over corruption cases. This followed a directive by President Muhammadu Buhari on the full implementation of Executive order 6. This was disclosed in a statement by presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu on Saturday. The presidency, however, did not reveal the identities of the affected persons.
4. Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo says President Muhammadu Buhari’s hands were too weak to sign the African Free Trade Agreement (AfCTA). He made the statement on Saturday while speaking at the Babacar Ndiaye lecture series in Bali, Indonesia. Obasanjo said he hoped that Nigeria will soon have a president who will sign the agreement.
5. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, on Saturday held a closed-door meeting with the Archbishop of Canterbury, His Grace Justin Welby. The meeting was held at the UK Embassy in Abuja. At the meeting were National Chairman of PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, DG of Atiku campaign, Gbenga Daniel, and British High Commissioner Mr. Paul Arkwright.
6. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has reacted to the move by President Muhammadu Buhari to totally implement the Executive Order 6. The party urged Nigerians to reject the attempt by the President Muhammadu Buhari to foist a full-blown fascism on the nation beginning with the placement of travel restrictions on 50 Nigerians.
7. Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, on Saturday commended the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, for picking him as his running mate. Reacting to his selection, the former governor promised to work closely with Abubakar. He said this on Twitter.
8. The Coalition of United Political Parties, CUPP, has reacted to the full implementation of the Executive Order number 6 by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government.
CUPP said the country was gradually sliding into tyranny. The coalition in a statement by its first spokesperson, Ikenga Ugochinyere blamed Buhari for not waiting for the final determination of the legal process by the Court of Appeal before taking such a decision.
9. A faction of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Enugu State led by Deacon Okey Ogbodo has insisted that Senator Ayogu Eze is not the party’s guber candidate for the 2019 general elections in Enugu State. Ogbodo said this in a statement he issued over the weekend in Enugu, where he maintained that the APC flag bearer in Enugu State is Barrister George Tagbo Ogara.
10. The Governor of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu, has been ‘attacked’ by the family of the missing leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu. Ikpeazu is under fire over his purported comment concerning the whereabouts of Kanu’s father, Eze Isreal Kanu. The spokesman for Kanu’s family, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, warned the governor against playing politics with their father’s whereabouts, saying the governor never showed concern but now making unnecessary comments on the missing family members due to his re-election campaign.
