1. The Nigerian Army has announced that operation against agitators of Biafra, kidnappers among others will commence next week. The army Headquarters said Operation EGWU EKE II, (Python DanceII), will hold in the South-east as Friday September 15 to Saturday October 14. Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai, Chief of Army Staff, COAS, told journalists through Maj-Gen. David Ahmadu, Chief of Training and Operations, CTOP, in Abuja, that the operations will cover Abia, Anambra, Enugu, Imo and Ebonyi states.
2. Former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, has disclosed that he would only support President Muhammadu Buhari for re-election in 2019 after a review of his performance towards the end of his four-year term. According to OBJ, the current president has performed well in his areas of strength, including war against corruption and Boko Haram insurgency.
3. The Nigerian government has accused Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Aisha Alhassan (Mama Taraba) of spending N12m on ‘familiarisation visits’ to unnamed skill acquisition centres in 2015. This is contained in a report from the Auditor-General’s office. The report came days after Mama Taraba declared support for the presidential ambition of former vice president Atiku Abubakar.
4. Report says no fewer than 20 persons have been killed in a night attack carried out by suspected gunmen at Ancha village in Bassa local government area of Plateau State. The attack, which took place in the late hours of Thursday, left many persons injured. The gunmen reportedly invaded the community while many residents were fast asleep, killing any person in sight. The report claims that victims were mostly nursing mothers and children.
5. More health professionals, under the aegis of the Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP) and the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) have given the federal government fresh ultimatum to revamp the infrastructure in the tertiary health institutions on or before September 30, 2017 or they embark on nationwide strike at the expiration of the ultimatum.
6. A former Minister of Education, Dr Oby Ezekwesili, has threw ‘jabs’ at presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, calling him a sycophant and comedian, alleging he does not take business of governance as a serious task. Reacting to a recent article by Garba Shehu titled ‘A President’s 32” TV’, Ezekwesili said it will be better for him to join the Nollywood industry and become a scriptwriter.
7. The All Progressives Congress (APC) has called for the immediate resignation of the Minister of Women Affairs, Aisha Jumai Alhassan over her alleged ‘derogatory remarks’ against President Muhammadu Buhari. A member of the National Working Committee (NWC) and National Vice Chairman, Northwest zone, Inuwa Abdukadir, said Alhassan’s comment was crude, hence she must resign.
8. The Police Command in Lagos State has arrested five suspects in connection with the shooting of a Rev. Father, Daniel Nwankwo, at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Onilekekere, in Lagos on Friday. In a statement issued to newsmen, the spokesperson of the command, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, said the suspects were being interrogated for vital information to aid police investigation.
9. The Plateau State Police Command has apprehended the runaway ritual killer suspect in Rivers state, Ifeanyi Dike. The twenty-three year old undergraduate of the University of Port Harcourt, Ifeanyi Dike killed eight-year-old Victory Chikamso Mezu and removed her body parts for ritual. He escaped from the custody of the State CID in Port Harcourt after being paraded at the Police Headquarters. There has been jubilation in Port Harcourt over the re-arrest of the suspect.
10. Former Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timi Frank, has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to be careful in dealing with all those urging him to seek re-election in 2019. He gave the advice during a phone interview on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today.’ He said there was no need for anyone to push him since he has right to make a choice, unless if such person(s) have ulterior motive
