1. Some members of the House of Representatives under the aegis of Progressives Caucus, have berated the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki, for criticising the Federal Government over the proscription of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB. The lawmakers described the statement credited to the Senate President as shocking. A statement signed by Aiyu Madaki, Sani Zorro and Mohammed Soba, the caucus also berated Saraki’s deputy, Ike Ekweremadu for showing support to the separatist group and its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
2. The Nigerian Army on Friday gave a detailed update on the ongoing Operation Python Dance in the Southeast, saying that troops made some arrests and recovered numerous dangerous weapons. This is contained in a statement by Colonel Sagir Musa, Deputy Director Public Relations 82 Division.
3. The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested three suspects after discovering an illegal firearms factory in Shenagu Village. The FCT Commissioner of Police, Sadiq Bello, identified the suspects as Philip John, who allegedly owned the factory; Onyegabueze Okpara, the supplier of ammunition; and Joseph Bulus, the distributor.
4. The Medical and Health Workers Union chapter of the National Agency for Food, Drugs Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has commenced indefinite strike. The Union said they were embarking on the industrial action to push for improved welfare package and for the management of the agency to implement an agreement reached on welfare package in 2013.
5. The Indigenous People of Biafra on Friday asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to set aside the order proscribing it as a terrorist group. A motion filed by IPOB’s lawyer, Mr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor, before the same judge on Friday contended that the proscription order was unconstitutional.
6. The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has claimed it has uncovered a fresh plot by the Federal Government to kill many youth from the South East zone, through mass murder, ahead of the 2019 general election, using men of the Nigerian Military. The group in a a release stated that the IPOB Intelligence Unit made the discovery which is targeted at incriminating members of the group by selecting and killing off condemned prisoners selected from various prisons and showing them to the world as the handiwork of its members.
7. A five-man team of men of the Special Anti Robbery Sqaud, SARS, led by one ASP Samuel Chigbu has been found guilty of extra judicial killing of two young men, Michael Akor and Michael Igwe at Oyigbo Local government area of Rivers State. Justice Adolphus Enebeli of the High Court in Port Harcourt, while ruling in the enforcement of fundamental human rights suit before him, declared that ASP Samuel Chigbu and his men undoubtedly and intentionally killed the two young men. The deceased families were also awarded 50 million Naira compensation.
8. The Lagos State government has directed owners and operators of articulated vehicles/trailers and petroleum tankers, to stay away from the state for now. Acting Commissioner for Transportation, Olanrewaju Elegushi, said the move was to curtail the gridlock that had taken over Apapa and its environs. Elegushi, at a briefing on Friday, said the incessant traffic bottleneck in the area had impacted negatively on commercial activities.
9. No fewer than 7,000 persons have been killed since the crisis in Jos started. The Director General, Plateau State Peace Building Agency, Joseph Langman has said modest estimate puts the figure of those killed in crisis in Jos within the last 10 years to slightly above 7,000. Lengman made this disclosure in his opening remark at the 2017 conference of the Christian Council of Nigeria in Jos.
10. In sports, the trio of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Neymar Jnr, have made the final shortlist for Best FIFA Men’s Player of the Year. The players had been named in an initial 24-man list of nominees last month and will now battle it out for the prize on October 23 in London.
