1. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed January 13, 2018, to conduct the re-run election for Anambra Central Senatorial district.
According to INEC National Commissioner, Solomon Soyebi, the decision to conduct the re-run election was made at the end of INEC 41st ordinary meeting of 2017 which considered among other things, the case of an outstanding election to fill the seat for the Anambra Central Senatorial District.
2. Former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, yesterday resigned from the All Progressives Congress.
Abubakar in a statement he personally signed on Friday, however, did not state which party he intends to join, but said he is pondering on his political future.
3. Abdulrasheed Maina, embattled former Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms, has signified interest to appear before the House of Representatives if his security is guaranteed.
Speaking through his lawyer, Mohammed Sani Katu, the embattled ex-pension boss said if he is given protection that no security agency will interfere or arrest him, he’ll appear in person.
4. A former Head of State, Genera Yakubu Gowon (retd), has told Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, to seek dialogue with the Nigerian Government rather than calling for secession.
Gowon advised Kanu to engage the Federal Government in talks to address issues affecting the South-East, and stop seeking disintegration as it could lead to loss of lives.
5. Chairman of Capital Oil and Gas, Ifeanyi Ubah, has declared that the “open show of high-handedness and impunity” in the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, will make the party lose the 2019 general elections.
Ubah, who disclosed that he made huge investments towards the growth and development of the PDP, stated that the party lacks internal democratic tenets that are meant to be the core values of a progressive party.
6. Over 20 people were feared dead yesterday in a fatal crash, at Njaba bridge, along the ever busy Owerri-Umuaka-Okwudor-Orlu federal highway.
The accident involved a tanker loaded with about 33,000 litres of premium motor spirit, PMS, and a fully loaded 18-seater commercial bus.
7. Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday narrated how he had been managing diabetes for the past 30 years, saying diabetes killed only those he described as “careless” people.
The former President who noted that he was above 80 years and could walk with agility despite being diabetic (covering a distance of 1km uphill of the distance on foot during the walk), lamented that many of the nation’s youths rarely engage in exercise.
8. The Secretary of All Progressive Congress, APC in Dutsinma Local government area of Katsina, Idris Bature has been found dead.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Besen Gwana who confirmed the development while addressing newsmen in the state, said the deceased was found with injuries on his head.
9. Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State has vowed not to abandon the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, the political party that gave him victory to join the All Progressives Congress, APC.
The Governor also said that the son of the late Dim Chukwuemeka Ojukwu who dumped APGA few days before the governorship election and joined the APC was inconsequential and did not have any political relevance.
10. On the international scene, tens of thousands of Zimbabweans gathered at a stadium in Harare on Friday, as Emmerson Mnangagwa took his oath of office as president.
Widely known as “the Crocodile”, Mnangagwa was all smile as he swore to national oath.
