Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Saturday morning

1. Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, yesterday dragged the senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial district, Shehu Sani, before the state High Court, demanding N2bn. El-rufai said he was seeking compensation for the injury allegedly suffered as a result of “the malicious statements” made by Senator Sani through the mass media to humiliate him and defame his integrity by calling him a drunk, loose cannon and an embarrassment to President Muhammadu Buhari.

2. Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters, has frowned at the latest report released by Amnesty International (AI), alleging human rights violations by the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN). While describing it as a gross disservice to the nation’s high security command, the military also accused AI of working towards weakening the efforts of the AFN at ensuring peace and security in the country.

3. The Presidency has also reacted to the new report by Transparency International (TI), revealing that corruption in Nigeria worsened between 2016 and 2017. Buhari, in a statement issued by Garba Shehu, his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, called for focus to be on facts, not fiction.

4. John Odigie-Oyegun, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has replied the letter written by Bola Tinubu, national leader of the party accusing him of sabotaging his assignment to reconcile aggrieved members. Oyegun, in his response on Friday, said Tinubu had his full support and prayed God to keep him strong and grants him His peace.

5. The General Advisor, British Military Advisory and Training Team (BMATT) in Nigeria, Major Ian Robertson, has said they would be willing to assist in the rescue of students from Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS), Dapchi in Yobe State, who were reportedly abducted by suspected Boko Haram insurgents. Robertson said his team was monitoring the situation closely and would readily step in when needed.

6. Scores of young Nigerians, yesterday kicked against the date for the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to be conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). The candidates displayed placards with various inscriptions such as; “Admissions are yet to close, why conducting another UTME now?”; “JAMB isn’t for revenue generation, stop milking our parents,” “2017 UTME held in May, why March in 2018?”, “2018 admissions not transparent.

7. One year after an armed robbery gang invaded a branch of new generation Bank in Owerri, Imo State, killed two policemen and wounded another, the Police have nabbed the last member of the gang. The suspect identified as Chinonso Gift Onwuegbuchulam, aka, Ogolo, hailed from Obazu Mbieri in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State.

8. Lagos chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has banned its local government chapters from holding meetings without the approval of the state secretariat. State chairman, Moshood Salvador, who announced the ban on Friday in Lagos, said the order became necessary after “some unrecognized people” held parallel local government meetings in Amuwo Odofin area of the state on Thursday.

9. Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has called out the federal government over the outsourcing of projects meant to benefit Nigerians. Atiku cited airing of the ongoing Big Brother Naija in South Africa and unveiling of Super Eagles World Cup jersey in London as some instances in which the government had outsourced Nigeria.

10. The Nigeria Police Force, NPF, has explained why it cannot arrest herdsmen, who allow their cattle to stray into and graze on airport runways. The Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, Mustapha Dandaura, said herdsmen could only be arrested in states where the anti-open grazing law was effective.
