Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Saturday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. Several persons have been killed, others declared missing while over 30 houses were razed after suspected herdsmen attacked Anyiin, Mbagber Council Ward in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State. Report says heavily armed men invaded the community late Thursday night and opened fire on the villagers, setting their abandoned houses on fire.

2. Arsenal’s longest serving manager, Arsene Wenger, Friday confirmed his resignation from the club, saying he will be leaving the club at the end of this season. Wenger revealed this in a statement published on the club’s official website on Friday morning.

3. The Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali has said the counter insurgency operations against Boko Haram have rendered the terrorist group incapable of launching organized attacks. The Minister called on African countries to learn from the strategies of Nigeria to curb the menace of terrorism.

4. Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Winifred Oyo-Ita, yesterday insisted that the suspension of six directors by the Board of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), headed by Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, was in order. Also, the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ibrahim Magu, noted that the agency recommended the suspension of the affected officers in order to allow detectives unfettered access to vital documents.

5. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday accused the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, of fresh plot to secretly “create 30,000 illegal polling units in compromised areas in favour of President Muhammadu Buhari. PDP described the said plot by INEC and APC as wicked, horrible and totally unacceptable.

6. Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, was on Friday attacked at the premises of the Anambra State Federal High Court, Awka, for accepting President Muhammadu Buhari’s appointment as spokesman of his campaign organisation for the 2019 presidential election. Keyamo was attacked by an Anambra businessman, Bobby Uzochukwu, who expressed disappointment that a human rights lawyer could accept an appointment from a president known to have violated human rights serially. The situation abruptly ended the press interview granted by keyamo, making the Senior Advocate to zoom off the area.

7. Troops of 3 Battalion on operation LAFIYA DOLE, Friday, successfully repelled Boko Haram terrorists’ attack at Ngamboru Ngala, Borno State. One Boko Haram terrorist was killed during the encounter, while other members of the group fled following a superior fire power from the troops. Texas Chukwu, Army’s Director of Information, said one soldier lost his life during the attack.

8. Similarly, a special exercise codenamed Operation LAST HOLD, aimed at completely recapturing the northern Borno from remnant of Boko Haram and return displaced persons to their homes and farmlands, is set to be launched. The Theatre Commander, Operation LAFIYA DOLE, Maj. Gen. Rogers Nicholas made this disclosure on Friday.

9.The Presidency has denied that a viral Facebook post purportedly by Zahra Buhari, the President’s daughter was on a fake Facebook page. The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, in a statement, described the person(s) behind the page and post as “merchants of mischief,” saying post has nothing to do with the first family.

10. Governor of Ekiti state, Ayodele Fayose, has continued his attack on President Muhammadu Buhari, over his comments on the youths in Nigeria. In a series of tweets posted on his verified Twitter page on Friday, Fayose claimed Buhari got into the Army at 19 and became a Second Lieutenant without O’Level certificate. He said under his government, the youths cannot have the same opportunity he had then.
