Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Saturday morning

1. The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, has withdrawn from the race for the Party’s national chairmanship race. He made this known to journalists at his Abuja residence on Friday night.

2. Nigeria’s kits for the 2018 World Cup has been voted the best out of the 32 teams that will participate in the tournament. In a poll carried out by Sky Sports, the Super Eagles shirt had over 40,000 votes, to emerge number one. The kit, which was reportedly sold out on Friday, received more than three million pre-orders, according to the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).

3. A member of the House of Representatives in Ekiti State, Opeyemi Bamidele, and one other person were shot on Friday at the All Progressives Congress, APC, secretariat in Ajilosun, Ado-Ekiti. Report says the bullet came from the rifle of a mobile policeman who was among those deployed to ensure security. While Bamidele was rushed to an unknown hospital, the yet-to-be-identified second victim is feared dead.

4. A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has set June 11 as date to commence hearing in a suit seeking the proscription of Fulani herdsmen as a terrorist organization. The plaintiff in the suit marked FHC/ABJCS/499/18 is also seeking the “prohibition of all activities of Fulani herdsmen in Benue State that have resulted in the deliberate and intentional killings, massacre, wanton destruction of both private and public properties as acts of terrorism under the Terrorism (Prevention) Act, 2011 as amended.”

5. The Vice president, Yemi Osinbajo has reaffirmed his loyalty to President Muhammadu Buhari. Osinbajo while speaking to a congregation of clergies at a forum of Greater Nigeria Pastors’ Conference in Osogbo, Osun State on Friday said that it would not be said of him that he has stabbed the President in the back.

6. Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodels Fayose has reacted to the shooting at the All Progressive Congress, APC, rally for the party’s candidate, Kayode Fayemi. Reacting, Fayose said the desperation of Fayemi to become governor of the state was responsible for the mayhem and bloodshed. He, however, sympathized with victims of the shooting presently being treated at the state university hospital.

7. Suspected armed herdsmen, Thursday night, reportedly ambushed and killed two travelers on a motorbike close to Mbazar community between Anyiin and Akwana in Logo local Government Area of Benue State. It was gathered that the attack also left two others with serious injuries. The area has now been deserted.

8. Former President of the Nigerian Senate, Adolphus Wabara has revealed the role he played during the botched third term bid of former President, Olusegun Obasanjo. Wabara said he was offered Two-Hundred and Fifty million Naira bribe to support Obasanjo’s third term bid, which he rejected.

9. The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has slammed Senator Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment, over the shifting of September 2018 deadline for the implementation of a new minimum wage. Reacting, Ayuba Wabba, NLC president, in a statement issued on Friday, said Nigerian workers were shocked by the statement credited to the minister.

10. Moves by the All Progressive Congress to stop the June 26th Local government election in Rivers state has suffered a setback. This is because Justice Bilkisu Aliyu of the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt has delayed judgement on an injunction sought by the APC to stop the Local government election from holding. Report says that the court delayed the judgment following applications by political parties; Accord Party, Independent Democrats and the People’s Democratic Party to be joined in the matter.
