1. The Super Eagles of Nigerian will today by 8pm kick off their World Cup campaign in Russia against Croatia at St. Petersburg Stadium.
Just yesterday, two African countries – Morocco and Egypt lost their opening games against Uruguay and Iran respectively.
2. The Chairman, the Patriots; Project Nigeria Movement; and Igbo Leaders of Thought, Prof. Ben Nwabueze, SAN, has stated that President Muhammadu Buhari was trying to redeem his fading image by proclaiming June 12 as the Democracy Day. Nwabueze said the President may have been “motivated by the public interest or by a political desire to secure the votes of Nigerians in the 2019 election, especially the votes of people of the South-West or to sow the seed of division among the members of the National Assembly in order to scuttle the threat to impeach him or to throw the country into turmoil or to smear the polity with the taint of illegality”.
3. President Muhammadu Buhari has said that he has suffered both in politics and in the military. The president, who spoke while playing host to the delegation of residents in Abuja led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mohammed Bello, said that his journey in politics had been very challenging.
4. Three persons were on Friday reported dead in Aba, the commercial nerve of Abia Statew with two policemen and a soldier were reported dead in the melee This was due to a bloody clash between personnel of the Nigerian Army attached to the Ngwa High School Forward Operation Base (Charlie Coy) and personnel of Mobile Police Force (PMF 55) unit in Osisioma Local Government Area of the State.
5. Another batch of 157 Nigerians, including nine pregnant women, on Friday voluntarily returned from Libya with the assistance of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM). Abraham Tamrat, Programme Manager, Migration Management Unit, IOM, Lagos, confirmed that the Nigerians arrived at the Cargo Wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos at 4.15a.m. aboard a chartered flight.
6. Nigerians from different segments of the society trooped out en masse on Friday to bid a final farewell to the late Chairman of PUNCH Nigeria Limited, Mr. Gbadebowale Aboderin, who was buried in Ikoyi, Lagos. Many of the attendees, who defied an early morning rain in parts of the city to be part of the occasion, had words of praise and commendation for the late sports enthusiast that died on May 30, 2018 at the age of 60.
7. President Muhammadu Buhari will sign the long-delayed budget into law on Tuesday. The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed said he expected the delay would have little effect on government projects.
8. A Methodist presbyter, Very Rev. Kayode Akande, and two other church leaders kidnapped by suspected herdsmen in Osun State have regained their freedom. The cleric identified as Bankole, an engineer and one Omodunbi, were released on Thursday by their captors.
9. The immediate past Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, says he is happy with the manner with which he is being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. Lawal said this during a programme on Channels Television titled, ‘Hard Copy’ which was aired on Friday.The former SGF said despite his ordeal, he was still close to the President.
10. Soldiers attached to the 144 Battalion under the 14 Brigade of Nigerian Army with headquarters in Ohafia, Abia State have rescued a kidnapped victim trapped inside the boot of a car being driven by a gang of kidnappers. The soldiers also arrested three members of the gang operating in Aba, the commercial nerve of the state and its environs, and recovered cache of ammunitions and guns which they allegedly use for their operation.
