Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Saturday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. A chieftain of the Coalition for Nigeria Movement, Akin Osuntokun, has reacted to the claim by the Presidency’s claims that he lied over the bombing in a Borno village during the Sallah period, insisting that 63 people were reportedly killed and villages burnt in a terrorist attack in Maimalari village in Borno State on the eve of Sallah. He said the attack on him demonstrated the penchant of Buhari government to leave the substance to chase shadow.

2. Report has it that a High Court sitting in Imo state has freed the 112 IPOB women who were arrested and detained following their protest to demand the whereabouts of Nnamdi Kanu and his parents. The judge in his verdict asked the police to release them unconditionally after the bail application filed by the lead counsel to the women, Ejiofor Uche, was not opposed, as the Police had no representation in court.

3. Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode has been invited for questioning by the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris. He was invited for allegedly engaging in conspiracy, criminal defamation, inciting publication, injurious falsehood and conduct likely to cause breach of peace. This was contained in a letter signed by the Commissioner of Police, CP Haruna Sani on behalf of the IGP. He is to appear on August 28 at the Force Headquarters.

4. Some irate youths in Iwo community, Osun State, on Friday morning set ablaze a police station located at Adeeke area of the state. The angry youths reportedly set the police station on fire following the extra-judicial murder of a student identified as Tunde Nafiu. Nafiu was allegedly shot dead by a police officer on Thursday while returning from Oluponan town in the state.

5. The police in Akwa Ibom State have killed four of the five armed robbers whose operation at a petrol station led to claims of attempted gunmen attack on the country home of Senator Godswill Akpabio last Tuesday. The state Police Commissioner Mr Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi, who disclosed this to journalists in Uyo at the command’s headquarters Ikot Akpanabia Uyo.

6. The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Aviation, Nkeiru Onyejeocha, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC. Onyejeocha, who represents Isuikwuato/Ummunneochi Federal Constituency of Abia State, was said to have formally registered for the APC in her ward on Wednesday after being convinced by former governor of the state, Orji Uzor Kalu, to do so.

7. Members of the Biafra Zionists Federation, BZF, have made a fresh claim that its leader, Barr. Benjamin Onwuka is dead. In a press statement issued Friday morning by the Deputy Leader of the group, Mazi Ambrose Ugwu, he said every effort they had made to ascertain the whereabouts of their leader had been unfruitful, an indication that he has been killed in detention.

8. The Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr Ibrahim Idris, has ordered members of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) to wear police uniforms with full identification, pending the launch of new FSARS uniform. The force Spokesman, Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Jimoh Moshood, in a statement in Abuja on Friday, said that Idris gave the order at a meeting with critical stakeholders.

9. The Ebonyi State Police Command on Friday confirmed the death of two children in a kerosene explosion which occurred at Ezzamgbo, Ohaukwu Local Government Area of the state. The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Loveth Odah, confirmed that one Mr Chinedu Onwe reported the matter. The product was allegedly purchased from one Dipro filling station at Ezzmagno junction.

10. President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday congratulated both President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita of Mali and Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe on their victories in their respective country’s elections. Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, issued Buhari’s congratulatory message in Abuja on Friday.
