1. The United States Consulate in Lagos on Friday declared that the issue of US visa for anyone, irrespective of social standing in the society, is strictly a confidential matter, which the US Government will not discuss in public. Public Affairs Officer (PAO), US Consulate, Lagos, Mr. Brussel Brooks made this known against the backdrop of the controversies surrounding the US visa status of former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
2. The Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawan, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari cannot be forced into signing the 2018 Electoral Act Amendment bill into law. The Senator said President Buhari has signed more bills than any previous President in the country. Speaking with State House correspondents after jumaat prayer at the Presidential Villa on Friday, Lawan said the President must take his time to study the document to avoid errors before signing it.
3. A popular and notorious thug, Kayode Ajayi, popularly known as “Ekun” was Friday arrested in Akure, the Ondo State capital over alleged involvement in kidnapping. “Ekun” who was paraded alongside two other suspects allegedly plotted the kidnap of an undergraduate of Adeyemi College of Education, ACE in Ondo West Local Government Area of the state, Ayomide Ogunsuyi.
4. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has threatened to disqualify the presidential candidates of some political parties due to their age. INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu issued the threat yesterday while accusing some political parties of submitting underaged candidates for the presidential race.
5. The Police Service Commission (PSC) has announced the commencement of the process of recruitment of 10,000 Nigerians into the Nigeria Police Force as Constables. PSC in a statement in Abuja on Friday signed by its spokesman, Ikechukwu Ani, said the application which will run till the 11th of January, 2019 should be done online. The Commission also noted that the exercise is absolutely free, adding that interested candidates should not to pay any money to apply and should not return any completed forms to anybody who might in the process demand for processing fees.
6. The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai, has ordered for a thorough investigation into the discovery of an alleged militia camp at NYSC Orientation Camp, Nonwa Gbam, Tai Local Government Area (LGA), Rivers State. The camp was discovered by troops of 6 Division Nigerian Army, on Thursday. Sani Kukasheka Usman, Brigadier General, Director Army Public Relations in a statement declared that the army would continue to remain professional and apolitical in the discharge of its constitutional duties.
7. The Chairman of the Ondo State Chapter of the National Union of Road Transports Workers, NURTW, Jacob Adebo, popularly known as ‘Idajo’ has been arrested by men of the Nigeria Police. Adebo is said to be an ally to the state governor, Rotimi Akeredolu. He was on Friday, picked up by men of the Force Criminal Investigations Department, FCID from the Lagos State Police Command over the recent siege on the Ondo State House of Assembly as well as attack on some members who impeached the erstwhile Speaker, Bamidele Oleyelogun and his deputy, Iroju Ogundeji.
8. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) have stripped Cameroon of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations hosting rights, because of concerns about the country’s security and infrastructure. According to a statement on CAF’s website, the decision was taken at Friday’s Exceptional General Meeting in Accra. The confederation’s executive committee has now opted to re-open bidding for the tournament, which is due to kick off in June 2019.
9. The Federal Government has directed Vice Chancellors of the striking public universities and inter-varsity centers, to enforce the no-work-no-pay rule on striking lecturers. This follows the deadlocks that have trailed attempts to end the ongoing strike by lecturers across all Federal Government owned universities in the country.
10. Former US President, George H.W. Bush is dead. He died at the age of 94 in Houston on Friday. This was announced in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Jim McGrath. The 41st President of the United States of America died on November 30, 2018.
