Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Saturday morning

1. The Federal Government has offered employment to 168 corps members who won the President’s National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Honours Awards.

The Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, who announced this at the award ceremony, which held on Friday in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, directed that the recipients of the awards, be employed immediately into the Federal Civil Service.

2. The Federal High Court Abuja was on Friday asked to decide whether Ademola Adeleke still qualified to be a serving Senator having been found guilty of forging the Secondary School Certificate he used in contesting the election.

This was contained in a suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/462/2019 and filed by Akinwale Olaniyi and Akinjide Monsuru and made available to newsmen by their Counsel, Mr Ola Adeosun in Abuja.

3. Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has threatened to pursue the imprisonment of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, by filing contempt proceedings against him.

Atiku’s camp insisted that INEC was yet to comply with the Atiku legal team, adding that it would have no choice but to seek the committal of Yakubu to prison for alleged disobedience to a valid order of court.

4. President Muhammadu Buhari’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, has said that Nigerians, who so wish, have the right to believe that his principal’s private visit to the United Kingdom is to seek medical attention.

5. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, National Chairman, Uche Secondus, on Friday alleged that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal government arm-twisted the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, into tampering with the result of the February 23 presidential and National Assembly elections.

Secondus also stated that there was no evidence that President Buhari was in charge of the country.

6. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on Friday announced that the National Grid is experiencing reduced power generation.

It said this was due to emergency maintenance by Nigeria Gas Company on its gas pipeline supplying gas to Egbin, Omotosho, Olorunsogo and Paras Power Stations.

7. As part of efforts to end the gridlock on Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, the Senate Committee on Works, on Friday advocated co-operation of various government agencies to make port operations easier.

The committee, during an emergency meeting with stakeholders in Lagos as part of its oversight functions, condemned extortion of truck drivers and asked law enforcement and traffic regulatory agencies to investigate and punish erring officers.

8. Two staff of Shell Nigeria have been kidnapped along the Ahoada-Ndele-Rumuji-Emohua axis of the East-West road, Rivers State.

Two police escorts were also killed during the kidnap.

9. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Akwa Ibom reported the highest unemployment rate of 37.7 per cent in third quarter 2018.

The bureau said that Rivers had the second highest reported unemployment rate with 36.4 per cent followed by Bayelsa with 32.6 per cent.

10. Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has debunked the rumour making rounds that he was planning to dump the Peoples Democratic (PDP), for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ortom told newsmen in Makurdi on Friday that there was no basis for leaving the PDP as he has been accommodated and made comfortable in return.
