Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Saturday morning

Good morning! Here are 10 things you need to know this morning:

1.Following the recent video released by Boko Haram that it had enough weapons to take on Nigeria and its neighbours, there are ongoing plans by Chad, Cameroun, Niger and Nigeria to launch a fresh attack on the sect at the same time. Report says new weapons to include tanks, long range and more sophisticated rifles, night vision equipment both for artillery and tanks usage as well as aircraft have been acquired to confront the insurgents.

2. The United Nations (UN) has cautioned Nigerians and political parties’ supporters to tread the path of peace in the forthcoming February’s poll and shun all acts capable of causing violating the forthcoming general elections. The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for West Africa, Mohammed Ibn Chambas gave the warning in an interview with journalists during a courtesy visit to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb Aminu Wali, in Abuja.

3. The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Attahiru Jega has said that the issue of distribution of Permanent Voter cards has since been laid to rest as Nigerians have been told about where to get their cards. He assured Nigerians that there was no going back on the conduct of the elections next month. Jega was speaking at a stakeholders meeting in Abuja.

4. Nigerian lawmakers on Friday said that the February elections will hold as scheduled as it will stand against any proposal for its postponement. The lawmakers said the postponement of the elections would lead the country to constitutional crisis as such provision cannot be found in the constitution. Majority of lawmakers who spoke on the suggestion by the NSA that the election be postponed vehemently kicked against it.

5. The University Of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES), now known as Cambridge Assessment, has responded to requests that it confirms the authenticity of the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Major General Muhammadu Buhari’s exam certificate,. It said on Friday that it will not be able to do so unless with a request from Gen. Buhari. It also confirmed that Hausa language was part of the subjects offered in 1961.

6. Even though they expressed their disappointment over the failure of Jonathan’s administration to deliver the dividends of democracy to their people, the people of the Middle Belt ironically said that they would still vote for him again in the February 14 general elections. THey took this position in a communiqué issued after a summit of the Middle Belt Dialogue in Jos which drew delegates from the Federal Capital Territory, Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Gombe, Kaduna, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau, Taraba and Yobe states.

7. Nigeria said it will continue to pay subsidy on petrol for the next 40 days despite the recent reduction in the pump price of the product from N97 to N87 per litre. This was disclosed by the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Madueke on a Raypower radio programme in Abuja.

8. The Nigerian Defence Headquarters on Friday said it has regained control of its website hours after unidentified hackers took control of the platform, http://defenceinfo.mil.ng and defaced it.The Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Chris Olukolade, said in a tweet hours after the attack that normal activities had been restored on the website and the infiltration had been blocked.

9. The naira on further crashed against the United States dollar on Friday as it exchanged for 208 at the parallel market, otherwise known as the black market. Report says the dollar sold for between N205 and N208 on the streets of Lagos, Abuja and other major cities in the country.
