1. Former People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Deputy National chairman, Senator Babayo Garba Gamawa is dead. Garba reportedly died after a brief illness in Bauchi on Friday. His Spokesperson, Isah Garba Gadau while confirming his death Friday night said he complained of a slight stomach ache and was taken to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) where he was admitted.
2. Nigeria has dropped three spots to 45th in the world in the latest FIFA rankings released on Friday. With seven days before the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, the Super Eagles maintain their third position on the continent. Gernot Rohr’s men, however, improved from its April points of 1435 to 1432.
3. The Deputy national chairman (South) of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Elder Yemi Akinwonmi has declared that Nigeria has been under military dictatorship since President Muhammadu Buhari assumed power in 2015. Akinwonmi said this when he received a delegation of European Union, EU, at the PDP Presidential Campaign Headquarters, Abuja on Friday.
4. A gorilla has been accused of swallowing N6.8million in the Kano Zoological Gardens. A finance officer in the zoo was quoted as saying the gorilla “sneaked into their office” and carted away the money, before swallowing it. The incident was said to have happened during the Sallah celebrations. Umar Kobo, the managing director of the zoo, confirmed that the money was missing and that the issue was being investigated.
5. The management of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, on Friday released call-up letters for prospective corps members of Batch “B” stream 1 2019. The information was made known in a statement on NYSC official Instagram page. In the release, prospective corps members have been instructed to start printing their various call-up letters as orientation starts on the 18th of June.
6. The Police in Kano has confirmed the death of one Mr Femi Oguntumi of Dakata Quarters who committed suicide without any notice. The Man who is a Staff of Karish College, Kawaji did not, however, leave any notes on why he committed suicide. Mr Femi was said to have hung himself on a ceiling fan in his room at about 10pm. Police Spokesman, DSP Haruna Abdullahi who confirmed the incident said they have already deposited Femi’s corpse at the Murtala Muhammad Hospital.
7. The Kogi State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has berated the alleged action of a social-cultural group ‘Igala Elders’ for their alleged decision to disqualify some governorship aspirants from contesting the November election in the state. The party, however, in a statement signed by Bode Ogunmola, State Publicity of the PDP on Friday noted categorically that it will abide by the party’s rules and regulations as enshrined in the party’s constitution on how its candidate will emerge under a free and fair primary.
8. The Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Ikeja on Friday struck out an application challenging the victory of James Faleke, representing Ikeja Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives. The Chairman of the Tribunal, Justice Kunaza Hamidu, struck out the application following a motion filed by the petitioner, Mutiu Okunola, a candidate of the PDP, who ran against Faleke in the election.
9. A Kano High Court on Friday dismissed an application of four Kano Emirate Kingmakers to stop newly installed Emirs from parading themselves as Emirs. The presiding judge, Justice Ahmed Tijjani Badamosi dismissed the application by the kingmaker’s counsel, Barr. Suraj Saida, SAN, ruling that the Emirs can continue going about their lawful activities as Emir of their Emirates.
10. Sunday’s International friendly match between Nigeria and Senegal will be played behind closed doors. This was confirmed by the Super Eagles media officer, Toyin Ibitoye, who also stated that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has given a go-ahead. According to him, both coaches have made this joint decision, as they hope to use the practice game to run through some last-minute tactical experiments on their respective teams.
