Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Saturday morning

Good morning! Here are 10 things you need to know this morning:

1. There was confusion in Calabar Prison in Cross River yesterday when inmates attempted to escape after a gun battle with warders. The inmates were however overpowered by the security forces. The incident happened around 11am.

2. Former Head of State and Chairman, National Peace Committee for 2015 General Elections, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar(retd), has said that with the assurance from the Nigerian government, it will be impossible to form an interim National government in the country. He spoke with Journalists on Thursday night in Abuja.

3. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, through its Campaign Director for Media and Publicity, Femi Fani-Kayode has admitted that the meeting recorded in the controversial Ekiti audio tape actually took place, but the discussion was different from what APC and its supporters are claiming was the subject. He said there was no point in the discussion where the issue of rigging was raised.

4. President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday in Ogun state boasted that by transforming the power sector, he has lived up to his campaign promises to Nigerians. He was speaking at the commissioning of the Olorunsogo II Power Station.

5. The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has further denied that it was given N7bn by the Presidency to campaign for President Jonathan’s re-election. The party said CAN does not play politics as its members cut across different political parties, and as such couldn’t have collected any amount from anyone for campaign.

6. The All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State, has dragged Governor Ayodele Fayose before the National Human Rights Commission over sponsorship of violence against its members in the state. This was contained in a petition submitted to the Commission by APC secretary in the state, Omotosho Ayodele.

7. Reports suggest that a faction of the Boko Haram insurgents had appealed to its members to sheathe their swords with the understanding that the battle was only favouring their leaders. The report claimed that the group distributed their message via some leaflets shared from an helicopter in Adamawa State.

8. The Osun state chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has given the Nigeria Police and the DSS 2 weeks to arrest Director of Media, Jonathan’s campaign, Femi Fani-Kayode over the ‘fake’ video he is currently promoting on how the party rigged the State’s election. The party said it will be forced to ask the State governor to set up an independent panel to investigate the matter if FFK is not arrested immediately.

9. One Richard Akinnola, a critic cum journalist has approached the Federal High Court, asking it to compel INEC, the Inspector General Police and other security forces to ensure that the rescheduled March 28 and April 11 elections hold as scheduled.

10. Hon. Evans Bipi, member representing Ogu Bolo state constituency in Rivers State who has been accused of leading the thugs that attacked APC rally in Okrika has asked the party(APC) to provide video evidence to prove that he was part of those who attacked the rally.
