Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Saturday morning

Good morning! Here are 10 things you need to know this morning:

1. Report says that South Africa has started working towards returning more than R100-million in Nigerian money that was confiscated last year, or making arrangement to now sell arms to the country after it refused to sell earlier. Report says the latest development is to ensure that the country starts on a good note with Nigeria’s President-Elect, Gen. Buhari.

2. First Lady, Patience Jonathan has denied allegation levelled against her by the Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Amaechi that she was mounting pressure on the INEC to have Rivers governorship election rigged in her favour. Reacting through the Director of Information in her office, Ihuoma Priscilla, Mr Jonathan said as an apostle of peace, she could not be involved in any act that would hinder peaceful conduct of elections in any part of the country.

3. The latest information on the abducted kids from Surulere area of Lagos state shows that the nanny identified as Mary Akinloye who masterminded the act has given the family of the kids two days to produce N13m ransom or lose the children. Report says she issued the ultimatum through a man who used her telephone to communicate with the family.

4. The All Progressives Congress has alleged that President Goodluck Jonathan’s unannounced visit to Lagos State a day to the governorship election was to arrange on how today’s election in the state could be manipulated in favour of the PDP candidate, Jimi Agbaje. This was contained in a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.

5. President Jonathan in a statement through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati has dismissed the APC allegation that he was in Lagos to rig the Saturday’s election. Jonathan wondered why he would rig the governorship election for the PDP when he did not rig the March 28 presidential election in which he was a candidate.

6. The factional Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Dele Olugbemi, has communicated to the state Chief Judge, Justice Ayodeji Daramola, advising him not to act on the APC lawmaker’s request that a panel to investigate allegations raised in the impeachment notice to Governor Ayodele Fayos be set up.

7. No fewer than 22 persons were killed on Thursday when Boko Haram insurgents attacked Borno villages of Dile and Buratai. Several others were also reportedly injured in the attack.

8. Report has it that a military helicopter crashed on Friday in Lagos State. Report says the crash resulted from hydraulic failure. It has however been confirmed that no casualty was recorded from the crash.

9. A former leader of the Niger Delta Vigilante, High Chief Ateke Tom, has advised the President-elect, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to continue with the Amnesty Programme put in place by ex-President Musa Yar’Adua. In his congratulatory message to Gen. Buhari, the ex-militant told him to work with leaders of the region to develop the region.

10. Workers in Ebonyi State have finally suspended their one-month strike following an agreement reached between its leaders and representatives of the state government on Friday.
