Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Saturday morning

Good morning! Here are 10 things you need to know this morning:

1. Two suicide bombers were among many other terrorists who were killed by the Nigerian troops when they attempted to attack Shetimari in Borno State Thursday evening. No fewer than 12 rifles and 1 machine gun were recovered from the insurgents as the army succeeded in repelling the attack.

2. Another aviation tragedy was averted on Friday evening as Aero Contractors Airline flight, carrying over 120 passengers, including the Director, Muslim Rights Concern, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, developed some technical fault mid-air. The plane that lost altitude, 20 minutes after it took off from the domestic wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, was diverted to Abuja after several minutes in the air amid fear and tension.

3. The United Nations has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to investigate reports of heinous crimes committed by the Boko Haram sect and alleged abuses by the Nigerian Army in the north east. A senior human rights official of the UN, Zeid Al-Hussein, said he had many times received reports of allegations of mass executions, rape and amputations of children by Boko Haram. He also said available information equally shows abuses by the military.

4. Report now has it that death toll from the bomb attack in Yola market has now risen to 45 as against the 31 deaths repoerted earlier.

5. A former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro has said he has never inflamed the crisis currently tearing down the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Lagos State. He spoke when the party leadership met with lawmakers elected on the platform of the PDP.

6. Reports are emerging that President Muhammadu Buhari may soon slash his salary and reduce his personal emoluments following his promise to Nigerians that he will cut down running cost of government. The Vice President and other government officials may likely follow the president’s decision.

7. Scarcity of fuel that is currently frustrating motorists nationwide may soon be brought to an end as Oil marketers on Friday said they have dispatched 700 trucks of the product to Abuja, vowing that long queues at filling stations will soon become a thing of the past. They disclosed this in a communiqué issued at the end of a meeting they held in Abuja with the Federal Government and other stakeholders in oil and gas sector.

8. The Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, has cautioned newly appointed Aide de Camp, ADC and Chief Security Officers, CSOs to State Governors not to play their roles as security officers and not to be engaged in domestic jobs. The IG gave the warning yesterday during a two-day induction course organised for the ADCs and CSOs.

9. An Abuja based company, Silon Concepts Limited, has dragged the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and two officials of its Presidential Campaign Organisation before an FCT High Court, Abuja for having failed to pay for the outstanding sum of N70m, being balance for a campaign contract. The company said PDP has failed to pay the balance of the voice SMS it sent out on its behalf during the campaign period.

10. Report says a tanker carrying Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), otherwise known as diesel has exploded around the Idimu area of Lagos. The incident occurred around 12:30am on Saturday. Casualty figure cannot be ascertained just yet.
