Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Saturday morning

1. Prince Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye has emerged as the new Olowo of Owo. The Olowo-elect garnered 14 votes out of 15 votes during the electoral process done at the Olowo’s palace. The votes were cast by the Senior Omo-Olowos (kingmakers). The emergence of the Olowo-elect is coming four months after the demise of the of late Oba Folagbade Olateru-Olagbegi who died in the early hours of April 17, 2019.

2. A 58-year-old daughter of Afenifere leader, Ruben Fasoranti, Mrs Funke Olakunrin, has been killed by gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen, Tribune reports. The report quoted an eyewitness as saying the 58-year-old died of gunshot wounds. According to the eyewitness, Olakunrin was suspected shot by Fulani herdsmen at Ore junction in Ondo State earlier on Friday.

3. Nigeria have moved two places up the FIFA Women’s rankings, following their first Round of 16 appearances at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 20 years. The rankings were released on FIFA’s website on Friday. The African champions are now in the 36th position with 1643 points, but they remain the continent’s top placed team.

4. The Ohanaeze Youth Council worldwide, NYC, on Friday warned herdsmen to stop moving around bushes and farmland across the South East from July 20, 2019. The youths warned of severe consequences if herdsmen are caught moving around bushes and farmlands with their cattle. In a statement signed by its President General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, NYC called on Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, to educate herdsmen on the new directive.

5. The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the last general elections, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has launched a fresh attack at the government of President Muhammadu Buhari over recent reports on the country’s debt. In a series of tweets on Friday, Atiku claimed that the current administration has done nothing but put the country in huge debts, adding that hunger and poverty have doubled in 2019.

6. The Senate has declared that the submission of President Muhammadu Buhari’s much-anticipated ministerial list was beyond its control. Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Adedayo Adeyeye, said that the Senate lacked the constitutional power to generate the ministerial list, adding that President Muhammadu Buhari was yet to transmit the ministerial list to the Senate.

7. Witnesses of Atiku Abubakar, 2019 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, have been reportedly attacked by unknown gunmen. This was disclosed in a post by the PDP on its verified Twitter page on Friday. According to the main opposition, the witnesses attacked were meant to testify at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal for the PDP Friday. Following the attack, the trial judge, Justice Mohammed Garba adjourned hearing on the PDP and Atiku /Obi Petition to Monday, the 15th of July 2019.

8. The Nigeria Police has confirmed the killing of the daughter of Pa Fasoranti, the National Leader of the Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Mrs. Funke Olakunrin by persons suspected to be Fulani herdsmen. The spokesperson of the Ondo State Police Command, Femi Joseph, said that some other passengers were kidnapped during the incident, which happened on Friday. Narrating how the incident happened, the PPRO stated that the hoodlums struck on the Benin-Sagamu Expressway.

9. Governor of Ondo State, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, has condemned the murder of Mrs Funke Olakunrin, daughter of Afenifere Leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti. Describing the death of Mrs Olakunrin as “one death too many,’’ Gov Akeredolu emphasized that the killing of the 58-year-old daughter of the Pan Yoruba Socio-political Leader “is unacceptable and condemnable.”

10. President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the extension of tenure of office of the Controller-General (CG), Nigeria Prisons Service (NPS), Ja’afaru Ahmed by one year. A statement on Friday by the Director (Press & Public Relations), Ministry of Interior, Mohammed Manga, explained that President Buhari granted the extension to allow consolidation in the ongoing programmes especially on human rights compliance, reformation and healthcare, agricultural and education programmes for the inmates.
