1. Violence rocked Akure, the Ondo State capital on Friday following the release of the name of Jimoh Ibrahim as the flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the forthcoming governorship election in the state.
Supporters of Jegede Eyitayo blocked major highways in the city, calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to rescind its decision.
2. The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has refuted the social media report that N3.4bn was budgeted for the national reorientation campaign “Change Begins With Me”.
He said that the report was untrue and a good example of challenges posed by democratisation of the technology of information dissemination.
3. The governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Jimoh Ibrahim, has accused Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko of sponsoring Friday’s protest that shook Akure, the Ondo Capital.
He asked the relevant security agencies to call the outgoing governor to order before he set the entire state on fire.
4. The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has finally recruited 888 out of the 6.5 million persons that had applied for the job. The screening was, however, overshadowed by the death of 16 persons.
NIS Comptroller General, (CG), Muhammed Babandede noted that the CDFIPB issued out guidelines for a fresh screening of only 2000 applicants whose names were published in national dailies on August 15 and 16 2016, respectively.
5. The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, has disclosed that from January 2016 till date, the country lost $7bn, about N2.1tn, to the activities of militant groups and oil pipeline vandals in the Niger Delta region.
The Group Managing Director of NNPC, Dr Maikanti Baru, who said this on Friday in Abuja at the 2016 Fiscal Liquidity Assessment Committee Retreat, noted that apart from security challenges in the region, politics, judiciary, oil prices and production cost continued to impact negatively on the oil industry.
6. Outgoing governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Mimiko has stated that the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to recognize Jimoh Ibrahim as the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate in the forthcoming governorship election was capable of setting the state on fire.
Mimiko said he was shocked to discover that Ibrahim was found in the list released by INEC instead of Eyitayo Jegede who was dully elected during the primaries.
7. There are strong indications that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission was intensifying moves to gather evidence against the former First Lady, Patience Jonathan, for a possible prosecution.
The commission had reportedly assembled a team of detectives saddled with the responsibility of identifying all houses and properties belonging to the former First Lady, which it would seize.
8. Embattled former Minister of State for Defence, Sen. Musiliu Obanikoro, has reportedly refunded the sum of N100m to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The EFCC had given a bail condition to Obanikoro, who has been in its custody since October 21, 2016. He was reportedly asked to refund the sum of N100m as a major condition for his bail.
9. President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday gave out his daughter, Hajiya Fatima Buhari in marriage to Mallam Ya’ u Gimba Kumo.
The wedding took place at the hometown of the President in Daura, Kastina State.
10. Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, has said that the ministry has succeeded in reducing the Federal Government’s monthly wage bill from N165bn to N142bn by eliminating 33,000 ghost workers.
She said that through the Efficiency Unit, the ministry had succeeded in negotiating huge discounts for government officials travelling on local and international flights for official assignments.
