Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Saturday morning

Good morning! Here’s today’s summary of Nigerian Newspapers:

1. The Administrative Secretary of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Ekiti State, Mr. Muslim Omoleke, who was kidnapped by some gunmen around Iwaraja, Osun State on Thursday has regained his freedom. The Commissioner of Police in Osun State , Mr. Fimihan Adeoye, broke the news of his release in Osogbo on Friday evening.

2. The Zonal Executive Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday suspended the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr Timi Frank, over anti-party activities. Report says Frank’s suspension followed the recommendation of a five-man disciplinary committee. The committee has also recommended to the party`s NEC that Frank should be expelled from the party.

3. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Friday, released a former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro. Obanikoro was released around 5pm after meeting his bail conditions.

4. The All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, on Friday fused the party into the United Progressives Party, UPP. Reports say sixteen of the 18 members of APGA announced the fusion in Enugu after they had paid homage to the former founding chairman of the party, Chief Chekwas Okorie, who is now the national chairman of the UPP.

5. A female suicide bomber was Thursday shot dead by troops in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State. A statement by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Kukasheka Usman, said the suicide bomber was gunned down while attempting to enter a military location in the state. Usman also revealed that another attack was repelled by the military, leading to the death all four terrorists, including 2 other suicide bombers.

6. President Muhammadu Buhari will on Monday swear in Justices Ejembi Eko and Amina Augie as Supreme Court judges. The Supreme Court Acting Director, Information, Soji Oye, made this known in a statement on Friday. According to Oye, the two Justices who were formerly of the Court of Appeal will be sworn in by the outgoing Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, who will exit office on November 10.

7. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Thursday interrogated the National Legal Adviser of the All Progressives Congress, Dr. Muiz Banire (SAN), for several hours. Banire, a former Lagos State Commissioner for Transport, is being investigated for an alleged bribery of a judge. He allegedly transferred about N500, 000 to Justice Terseer Agbadu-Fishim of the National Industrial Court. The EFCC seized his passport before granting him administrative bail.

8. The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, has said that the recent meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari and the Niger Delta leaders ended fruitfully, asserting that the distrust that had existed between President Muhammadu Buhari and Niger Delta leaders had given way to a peaceful atmosphere.

9. The Federal Government Friday announced that it had employed 200,000 graduates who will work for only two years as teachers and agricultural extension workers across the country. According to the announcement, the new employees would be paid N30, 000 per month, which would be paid directly into their accounts. Speaking in Abuja at the second presidential economic communication workshop organised by the office of the vice-president on Friday, the Senior Special Assistant to the VP on media and publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande, said out of the fresh employees, 150,000 would work as teachers while the remaining 50,000 would work as extension workers.

10. A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, said if President Muhammadu Buhari was serious about fighting corruption, he should give up the proposal for the loan of $29.9bn as such was capable of mortgaging the future of the country. He urged Buhari to rather engage in an aggressive recovery of looted funds saved in foreign banks by past military rulers in the country. He said this at a symposium tagged: “X-raying 50 years of military intervention in Nigeria’s politics.”
