Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Saturday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. The National Board for Technical Education, NBTE, has fired five senior lecturers and seven other workers at the Auchi Polytechnic. Fifteen other lecturers and one instructor were also demoted. This development follows report of sexual harassment and extortion of female students in the school.

2. The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, on Friday in Abuja condemned the request of $30bn loan by President Muhammadu Buhari‘s administration, saying that even if the loan is approved, no financial institution will be willing to grant such a loan. He was quick to also condemn the policy of the government, saying it lacks the needed direction to fix Nigeria’s economy.

3. Following the death of Miss Ifedolapo Oladepo, a female corps member,who died at National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, orientation camp in Kano State, the mother of the deceased girl has alleged that her daughter died out of the negligence of officials of the NYSC. She gave a blow-by-blow narrative of how her daughter struggled unto death with little or no effort by officials of the NYSC who had initially believed the lady faked the illness.

4. The All Progressives Congress leaders in Bayelsa state have sent a letter of protest to President Muhammadu Buhari, over alleged irregularities and lopsidedness in recent promotion exercise carried out by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC. They claimed that the promotion was meant to be on the basis of performance, qualification and other in-house parameters. They said the exercise conducted by the NNPC which excluded Bayelsa indigenes from the twenty slots allocated to the South-south region out of a hundred and nine positions in the corporation was unfair.

5. Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State, Friday lamented the increasing influx of Boko Haram insurgents into Falgore forest in the state. The governor who disclosed this development in Abuja said he was in the Villa to brief President Buhari on the development.

6. A Federal High Court in Abuja ordered on Friday ordered the Federal Government to release the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, also known as the Shi’ite sect, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, and his wife, Zeenat, from detention and provided for them an accommodation within 45 days, saying that their continued detention violates their fundamental human rights. The court also awarded N25m each, totalling N50m, to the Shi’ite leader and his wife.

7. Prominent GSM service provider in the country, MTN Nigeria has been ordered to pay full four years post-disengagement salaries to 63 workers, who were laid off by the company in 2009. The Lagos Division of the National Industrial Court, handed this order and equally awarded additional N10,000 against MTN in favour of each of the 63 workers to cover the cost of filing their suit. Harrison Ossai, Gabriel Ameh and Stephen Mahaja, had dragged the network provider to court on behalf of themselves and 60 other workers.

8. The Federal Government has approved the payment of N522.74bn to the 36 states of the federation as part of the reimbursement for the over-deduction on the Paris Club loan. This was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by the Federal Ministry of Finance.

9. Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly matters, Senator Ita Enang, has said the performance of the 8th Senate has surpassed previous sessions in just two years, disclosing that President Muhammadu Buhari has put his assent to 8 bills, while 9 new ones have been transmitted to him for assent. He said the present lawmakers have truly dedicated their time to the job of lawmaking.

10. The Department of State Security Service, yesterday, released from detention, a former member of the Presidential Arms Investigation Panel, Muhammed Umar, who has been in detention for about six months. Umar, a retired Air Commodore, was arrested by the DSS in June for alleged money laundering and illegal possession of firearms.
