Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Saturday morning

1. Governor of Ebonyi state, David Umahi, on Friday carried out a major cabinet reshuffle. The move saw four Commissioners, two Senior Special Assistants and 11 Senior Assistants swap positions. This was confirmed by the State Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Senator Emmanuel Onwe.

2. Two Chibok schoolgirls who escaped from the Boko Haram captors have completed their studies at an American High School in the United States. The girls – Debbie and Grace graduated after completing junior year (11th grade) and senior year (12th grade) at a private international school in the Washington metro area.

3. The Oyo State Government has announced the indefinite closure of Emmanuel Alayande College of Education (EACOED), Oyo, owing to violent protest by students over their welfare. A statement issued in Ibadan on Friday by the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Adeniyi Olowofela directed students of the institution to vacate the school premises immediately.

4. The Board of Continental Broadcasting Services Ltd., CBS, owners of Television Continental, TVC, and Radio Continental, on Friday laid off 145 staff. A statement issued by the management said the decision was part of its effort to restructure its enterprise.

5. No fewer than 14 persons were killed on Friday by some unknown gunmen in Sime Tai area of Rivers state. Reports that the attack was carried out by a cult group on a reprisal mission in the early hours of the day.

6. Kogi state governor, Yahaya Bello, has said Senator Dino Melaye, does not deserve his response and that he will only respond to his several comments about him “when a human being is talking”. Bello stated this while speaking with reporters after observing Ju’maat prayer at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday.

7. A large number of Kogi West Senatorial district constituents, on Friday marched to INEC’s headquarters in Lokoja, demanding the recall of Senator Dino Melaye, who represents them at the National Assembly. They claimed the lawmaker was not performing and that they were tired of continuous embarrassment he was causing them.

8. Some gunmen on Friday invaded Kagurdna, Kakau District of Chikun local government area of Kaduna State and abducted the 60-year old wife of the village head, Chief Amos Yerima and her children. A member of the vigilante was also shot dead while he attempted to stop the armed men.

9. Kidnappers of the former Cross River State Commissioner of Youths and Sports, Mr. Patrick Ugbe, on Friday demanded N30m ransom for his release. Ugbe, was kidnapped late Thursday by some gunmen in a house along the Ekpo-Iso lane in the Ikot-Ansa area of Calabar metropolis.

10. Players and officials of the Super Eagles, on Friday arrived in Abuja after camping and playing two friendly matches in France. The players will now be heading to Uyo ahead of their Saturday’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa.
