Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Saturday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian newspapers‎

1. The British government has denied claims by some secessionist groups in parts of Nigeria that it was backing their agitation for Nigeria to disintegrate. The British Envoy in Nigeria, Mr Paul Arkwright, said the former colonial master strongly supports the federal government.

2. Former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, has taunted President Muhammadu Buhari who is away in London for medical check-ups since May 7 and the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, for missing out at the G20 Summit taking place in Hamburg, Germany.

Femi-Kayode said that Presidents of fellow African nations like Senegal, Ivory Coast and South Africa are present, but Buhari is “missing” and Osinbajo was not invited.

3. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has once again affirmed that Nigeria’s breakup is no longer possible as the nation has gone beyond that.

The ex-president noted that disintegration was not the solution to the myriad of problems currently facing Nigeria.

4. The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN, has warned the Federal Government and the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council against expunging  Christian Religious Knowledge from schools’ curricula.

The association’s National Publicity Secretary, Bishop Emmah Isong, said it would be wrong for the government to take over 60 million Christians in Nigeria for granted with its ‘harsh’ decision.

5. The Nigerian Senate has vowed that  it will not back down on its decision to reject the appointment of the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Ibrahim Magu.

It said it will also not rescind its decision to suspend further consideration and confirmation of appointments made by the Presidency over the position taken by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo that some appointments did not require legislative approval.

6. Former Minister of Culture and Tourism, Femi Fani-Kayode, has once again claimed that Oduduwa Republic will be created 6 months after Biafra becomes a sovereign nation.

Fani-Kayode, who has been publicly supporting Biafra’s movements for secession from Nigeria, said Oduduwa Republic shall be established no more than 6 months after Biafra has been created. Then we shall be free. TIME FOR REFERENDUMS!”

7. Operatives of the Rivers State Police Command have rescued 14 passengers who were abducted on Thursday by gunmen.

The rescue was said to have come less than 24 hours after they (bus passengers) were whisked away by their captors around Rumuji in Emohua Local Government Area of the state by their captors.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Nnamdi Omoni, explained that the rescue was made possible by a well-meaning Nigerian, who gave information to the police on the whereabouts of the kidnap victims.

8. A coalition of Niger Delta militants has blamed the ongoing agitations across the country to the lopsided appointments by the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

The militants observed that  most of the heads of key public positions were from the northern part of the country, adding that such skewed appointments were an indication of an agenda against other ethnic groups and geo-political zones.

9. The  Nigerian currency, Naira on Friday suffered marginal loss against the dollar at the parallel market in spite of CBN’s intervention at the foreign exchange market.

The Naira lost one point to exchange at N366, weaker than N365 traded on Thursday, while the pound sterling and the Euro closed at N468 and N412, respectively.

10. Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose has averred that he would emerge Nigeria’s president through divine intervention in 2019.

He vowed never to become a member of the All Progressive Congress (APC), saying Nigerians especially the youths, were brainwashed through the social media to vote “for a President they never knew.”
