Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Saturday morning

1. There seems to be a major disagreement between the United Nations and the Nigerian Army over the invasion of a building occupied by the world body on Friday in Maiduguri, Borno State. The Army, in a statement on Friday, said the action was part of counter-insurgency activities of its Theatre Command, but the UN, in a statement said its Humanitarian Coordinator for Nigeria, Edward Kallon, stated that the search was without authorisation.

2. The Department of State Services has said that it has arrested a suspected Boko Haram cell leader and six other suspects linked to the insurgents. It said that the suspect, Usman Musa, was arrested in Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State on July 1.

3. What would have resulted to a major crisis was averted on Friday in Abuja during protests by the #resumeorresign# coalition and pro-government protesters at the Unity Fountain, Maitama, Abuja. The protesters led by Charlyboy were already observing the fifth day of their sit-out at the Fountain when members of the pro-government group, Centre for Fairness and Justice, stormed the garden and attempted to attack them. Police, however, shielded them from the government supporters.

4. The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has said that the current government led by President Muhammadu Buhari is working tirelessly to fulfil its electoral promises. According to him, contrary to what opposition and the enemies of the government are saying, Buhari has been living up to expectation especially in the critical areas of developing the economy as well as fighting corruption and insecurity.

5. Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has said that the decision he took to retire 93 officers in a day was why the Army can no longer stage a coup against the nation’s democracy and the reason for the survival of the Fourth Republic. He said with that decision, officers capable of staging a coup d’etat were relieved of their job.

6. The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has set up a Special Investigation Panel to probe the alleged corruption in the ongoing police promotion exercise. The panel was set up, following complaints and allegations credited to the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Navy, Senator Isah Misau, who had claimed that some policemen informed him that they paid huge bribes for promotion.

7. ​T​he All Progressives Congress, APC​,​ in Borno State has alleged​ that loyalists of former Governor Ali Modu Sheriff ‎led by one Barrister Kolo Adam, ​were behind rumours claiming that Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau has been arrested at a UN rented facility in Maiduguri​. Publicity Secretary, Makinta Zarami in a statement issued in Maiduguri on Friday, said that Kolo Adam was the first to claim that he had information that Shekau had been captured with one of his legs injured.

8. Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has removed the station managers, porters, and ticket officials at Idu and Rigasa rail stations over alleged ticket racketeering. The Minister gave order for their removal while inspecting the Abuja-Kaduna rail stations on Friday in Abuja.

9. Some bishops have asked President Muhammadu Buhari to resign from office because of his ill health. The bishops also queried the Presidency for persistently refusing to disclose Buhari’s health status, saying they were in support of protesters demanding the President’s resignation. One of the Bishops is that of the Anglican Diocese of Owo, Rt. Revd. James Oladunjoye.

10. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has cleared six aspirants and disqualified one ahead of the November 18 governorship election in Anambra State. Akolisa Ufodike was the aspiring candidate disqualified from the contest on grounds of dual citizenship.
