1. The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Friday continued their threat to shut all South African-owned businesses out of Nigeria. As at 8am, the protesting students were already on the streets of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, to ensure DSTV, GOTV, MTN and Stanbic Bank offices were not opened for the day. The Multichoice office in Isale Igbein, the MTN office in Okelewo/Sokori and branches of Stanbic Bank in Abeokuta were affected by the protest.
2. Thousands of Nigerians were trapped for hours as drivers of articulated vehicles block both lanes of the Abuja-Kaduna highway. It was reported that the road was blocked following the death of one of the drivers, who was allegedly shot by a policeman for his refusal to give N2000 bribe. Eyewitnesses said the deceased, a J5 driver, was shot around midnight at a checkpoint near a flour mill company in Kaduna.
3. An Abuja Federal High Court on Friday ordered the All Progressives Congress, APC, to halt activities over the adoption of indirect primaries to elect candidate for the November governorship election in Kogi State. The Justice Taiwo Taiwo-led court ordered parties in the suit challenging the planned adoption of the indirect primary mode by the Kogi State chapter of APC, not to take any step that could affect the subject of the case pending its final determination. He gave the order while ruling on an ex-parte motion instituted by some members of the Haddy Ametuo-led faction of the party.
4. The Civil Defence, Fire, Immigration and Prisons Board, CDFIPB, on Friday, announced the commencement of recruitment into Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC. A statement signed by Secretary of CDFIPB and posted on NSCDC Facebook page said the recruitment would be in six categories. It directed applicants to commence their online registration from 10th August 2019 to 7th September 2019.
5. Bishop David Oyedepo, founder of Living Faith Church, has reacted to the killing of a Living Faith Church pastor, Jeremiah Omolara by unknown gunmen. Omolara, a resident pastor of the Living Faith Church in Romi New Extension, a suburb of Kaduna metropolis, was killed along the dreaded Kaduna-Abuja road when he, his spouse and son were traveling to Abuja. But Speaking during Day 2 of the church’s Week of Spiritual Emphasis on Thursday Oyedepo released curses on the killers and their generation.
6. President of the Nigeria Football Federation Amaju Pinnick, on Friday, announced that the Super Eagles will face Ukraine in a post-AFCON friendly next month. Ukraine are ranked 25th in the world and have never played against Nigeria’s senior national team. That makes the match a historic game for both countries if it goes ahead. According to him, the game will be played in Kiev on September 10, three days after a European Championship qualifier against Lithuania.
7. Former Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, on Friday distanced himself from the N9.9bn linked to him and frozen by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. Ambode declared that his bank account does not contain N9.9bn, let alone frozen by the anti-graft agency. The immediate past governor stated this a statement released on his behalf by his media aide, Habib Aruna. Ambode stressed that his record is very clear. He disclosed that there has been no communication between him and the anti-graft agency on this issue.
8. Suspected Fulani herdsmen invaded farmlands at Ikot Obio Nso community in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, killing one Friday Etor and injuring another, Nsikak Udoh. DAILY POST gathered that the deceased died on the spot from gun shots on his neck while Udoh was shot in the leg during the attack on their farmlands. It was further gathered that the herdsmen arrived the community a week ago with large herds of cattle, causing destruction to farm crops in the area.
9. A Federal High Court Lagos State on Friday slammed a N1bn bail on a former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Maurice Iwu, for an alleged fraud of N1.23bn. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Thursday arraigned Iwu before the court on a four-count charge bordering on money laundering. The judge, Justice Chuka Obiozor, ruled that Iwu should be remanded in EFCC custody till Friday. Iwu was alleged to have between December 2014 and March 2015, aided the concealment of the sum of N1.2billion.
10. Bobrisky, a notorious cultist of Gokana, was captured on Friday by the Nigeria Army. Bobrisky’s capture came less than twenty-four hours after Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike placed a thirty million naira bounty on him. Speaking during a security meeting with leaders of Rumuolumeni Community at the Government House Port Harcourt, Wike thanked the Nigerian Army for capturing the suspected cultist.
