1. The Jama’atu Nasril Islam, under the leadership of Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar yesterday asked Muslims in the country to defend themselves against attacks by the violent Boko Haram sect. The group said the federal government had clearly failed to defend them, hence it’s now their duty to defend themselves against external forces, especially the dreaded Boko Haram militants.
2. The national leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress has intervened in the none payment of December salaries to workers by 11 state governments. To this effect, the labour body has called on its chapters in Benue, Plateau and Osun states to issue ultimatum to their respective governments where they are expected to pay or embark on a strike action.
3. The Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari has said that President Goodluck Jonathan and his party, PDP, are currently bereaved of ideas to effectively govern the country. This was contained in a New Year message to Nigeria by the former Head of states.
4. President Goodluck Jonathan has disclosed his resolve to decisively deal with anyone whose interest is to cause trouble before, during and after the 2015 general elections. He said the post-2011 elections violence that erupted in some parts of the country, he was determined to deal with trouble makers. This was contained in his New Year message to the country.
5. The Nigerian Army has set up General Court Martials in three cities to try various allegations of offences against soldiers involved in the ongoing counter-terrorism ad counter-insurgency operation in the North-East. This was announced by the Director, Army Public Relations, Brig. Gen. Olajide Laleye, on Wednesday in Abuja. He announced that the courts were in operation in Abuja, Lagos and Jos.
6. The All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission to comply strictly with the constitution and the Electoral Act as it prepares for the 2015 general elections. Giving the advice on behalf of the party, its National Director of Publicity, Mr. Ifeanacho Oguejiofor, expressed optimism that 2015 would be better than 2014 in terms of economic advancement.
7. Vice Chairman, Lagos West Senatorial district of the APC, Chief Folusho Ologunde, has been picked as the Director General of the campaign organisation to the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode. This was contained in a statement issued by the media team of the campaign organisation.
8. The 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maiduguri, Wednesday, declared a two-day restriction of vehicular movements in Maiduguri during the New Year and Eid-El-Maulud celebrations. This announcement came through Colonel Sani Usman, the Spokesman of the division.
9. The Speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Dr Adewale Omirin, has termed the purported passage of the state budget by seven suspended members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the House of Assembly as illegal, saying that the exercise was done in futility.
10. Report says a military barracks at Ungwar Madaki area of Gombe city was on Wednesday evening bombed by the dreaded Boko Haram sect. It has been revealed that the affected barracks is located close to the state low-cost housing estate. Information regarding casualties figure has remained very sketchy.
