1. Embattled former Chairman of the Presidential Taskforce on Pension Reforms, Abdulrasheed Maina, has opened up on the controversy trailing his reinstatement into civil service and alleged disappearance from the country.
The former pension boss said there’s no money missing anywhere, adding that he went into hiding because some people were trying to assassinate him.
2. Sule Lamido, former governor of Jigawa State, has stated that the All Progressive Congress (APC) lied to Nigerians in 2015.
According to him, the ruling party is harbouring the “bigger thieves” and increasing hardship of the people.
3. Powerful explosion was heard around Muna garage in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital on Sunday.
Kabiru Shettima, a resident, told our reporter that those who survived the blast were being taken to the hospital in tricycles popularly called Keke Napep.
4. Femi Fani-Kayode, has described the Miyetti Allah, a cattle breeders’ association, as cow worshippers out for “mass murder”.
He noted that the association has nothing to do with God but violence, terror, racism and paganism.
5. Former Nigeria international, Daniel Daudu has been killed in a crash in Indianapolis in the United States.
The ex-University of Indianapolis player died when a large part broke off the rear of a northbound semitractor-trailer and struck Daudu, who represented Nigeria at the 2007 World U20 Basketball Championships in Serbia.
6. The International Monetary Fund has advised the Federal Government to urgently revisit tax holidays and exemptions given to companies.
The Washington-based Fund also asked the Federal Government to increase taxes imposed on tobacco and alcohol, emphasising the need for socially responsible fiscal adjustment based on revenue mobilisation.
7. Governor Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State has blamed the irregular payment of workers’ salaries by his administration and other states in Nigeria on economic downturn induced by the brazen corruption, wanton theft of crude oil and mismanagement of the country’s resources by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led Federal Government.
According to the governor, no reasonable person or government would be happy for being incapacitated to perform its required responsibility.
8. Senate Ad-Hoc committee probing alleged misuse of revenue, under-remittance and other fraudulent activities in the collection, accounting, remittance and expenditure of Internally Generated Revenue by revenue-generating agencies, has summoned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris and the Director General of Department of State Services (DSS), Lawal Daura to assist the Ministry of Commerce and Industry as well as the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) in ejecting concessionaire of the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex, AULIC Nigeria Limited and recover about N6.5 billion, being accrued revenue from the company over a nine-year period.
Committee Chairman, Solomon Adeola handed down the directive, at the weekend.
9. The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) at the weekend scaled the first hurdle in the legal battle to compel the Senate President, Dr Bukola Sakari and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Dogara Yakubu, to account for the spending of N500 billion as running cost for the National Assembly between 2006 and 2016.
Justice Rilwan Aikawa of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, ruling in the suit numbers FHC/L/CS/1711/16 and FHC/L/CS/1710/16 also ordered the legislative body to disclose monthly allowances of each member.
10. Kogi State University (KSU) chapter of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has sued Governor Yahaya Bello over the proscription of its activities within the university.
The Acting Chairman of the union in KSU, Dr Daniel Aina, said that apart from challenging the ban on the union’s activities, ASUU was also challenging the sack of 120 academic staff of the institution by government.
