Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Monday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. The Independent National Electoral Commission, on Sunday declared the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, and incumbent Governor, Willie Obiano winner of the November 18, 2017 governorship election in Anambra State. The governor who ran for a second term in office, polled 234,071 votes to beat Tony Nwoye of the All Progressives Congress, APC who came second with 98 ,752 votes.

2. Zimbabwean President, Robert Mugabe, yesterday in his address to his country, maintained that he remains the leader party-ZANU-PF-congress in December, and also refusing to step aside as expected by many.

3. The candidate of the United Progressives Party, UPP, in the Anambra election, Osita Chidoka, Sunday gave reasons why he lost in the Saturday’s governorship election. Chidoka said he lost because he was approached and told to pay voters for their votes, but refused. He said that the choice of Obiano was an indication that the people preferred the highest bidder against those with ideas.

4. No fewer than five persons including a 60-year-old woman, have been confirmed dead after consuming local gin sold by one Uwadiegwu Eze, a native of Umunakara community, in the Ngor-Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State. Report says those killed include; Daniel Nwosu Jnr. 45; Friday Osuji, 70; Ifeanyi Njoku, 31; Adanna Iheanacho, 60, and Benjamin Okoroafor.

5. Report says Distinguished Emeritus Prof. Vincent Olusegun Olunloyo is dead. The report claims that Olunloyo died on Friday, October 13 in London, United Kingdom, at the age of 74. He was a Fellow of the Academy of Science, a Fellow of the Academy of Engineering and a member of the Nigerian National Order of Merit.

6. The Ekiti State governor, Ayo Fayose has denied and termed as false reports that he was moving to the APC. A statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi on Sunday night, quoted the governor as saying that joining the APC is like leaving Jesus Christ for Satan.

7. Three persons were killed in Ukanafun Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State on Sunday, after gunmen invaded the home of the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in the state, Udo Ekpenyong. The police spokesperson in the state, Bala Elkana, who confirmed the incident, said the commissioner’s younger sister was among those killed by the gunmen.

8. Embattled ex-Pension boss, Maina in a latest revelation through his lawyer, Barr Sani Katu, has claimed that the federal government was owing him over N159BN, as against the N2.1bn he is being accused of siphoning while in office. He challenged the anti-graft agency to set up at an open panel of investigation where he would reveal several things to Nigerians. Biafra Nations Youth League, BNYL, has expressed confidence that the struggle for Biafra would be fruitful. BNYL Leader, Princewill Obuka, in a statement on Sunday said the group will soon commence talks with leaders of other pro Biafra movements. Obuka said the position of BNYL and its agenda towards actualizing Biafra will as well be presented to others after an executive congress coming up in Bakassi.

9. Report has it that Bilyamin Bello, the son of a former Peoples Democratic Party Chairman, Haliru Bello, was on Saturday allegedly stabbed to death by his wife, Maryam Sanda. Sanda is the daughter of embattled former Aso Savings Bank boss, Hajia Maimuna Aliyu. The report claims the trouble resulted from the allegation of infidelity against Bilyamin by his wife after she saw a text message on his phone.
