Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Monday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. Big Brother Naija, BBNaija, 2019 housemates, Jackye and Gedoni were on Sunday, shown the exit door of the television reality show. They were evicted from the Pepper Dem edition after earning the lowest votes from the viewers. Fourteen housemates are now left in the house.

2. There was serious tension in Udu, Delta State yesterday as gunmen shot dead a suspected internet fraudster simply identified as Obus, for swindling them. It was gathered that the deceased and his girl friend had just returned from an outing when the gunmen struck. They seized the deceased’s girlfriend and ordered her to take them (gunmen) to his room where they shot him dead. The gunmen, however, left the scene of incident without hurting any other person in the area.

3. No fewer than 200 houses and properties worth million of Naira were destroyed as result of heavy downpour in Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State at the weekend. Chairman of the local government Abdulrashid Illah Ringim, disclosed this.

4. Shehu Sani, former Kaduna Central Senator, at the weekend noted that the South West and South East regions were losing the grip on the 2023 presidency. Sani said both regions may lose out if they failed to work together in unity.

5. A fire outbreak at the weekend razed down 11 shops in Nguru town of Yobe State. Property worth millions were destroyed. The inferno started following an electrical fault few minutes to 10pm on Friday, when business operators have shut down all transactions and have retired to their respective homes.

6. The Police in Kaduna State have confirmed the kidnap of five persons by armed men on Friday at Danbushiya Village, at the outskirt of Kaduna metropolis. The police said on Aug. 23 at about 2300hrs, DPO Malali reported that he received a distress call that, Armed men in military uniform blocked access road to Baba Tunde Fashola Housing Estate, Danbushiya Village, at the outskirt of Kaduna and intercepted a Honda Accord Reg. No. LND 753 AL and five other vehicles and kidnapped seven persons.

7. FIFA is considering the possibility of removing linesmen and replacing them with robots, in the use of Video Assistant Referees (VAR). Assistant referees could become a thing of the past, as a specific department has now been created, to explore just how influential technology could be on football. If the findings from FIFA’s VAR team prove that technology can be beneficial and perfectly accurate, the offside flag could also become a thing of history.

8. Nobel Laureate, Profssor Wole Soyinka, at the weekend, warned the Federal Government and security agencies, to stop trying to silence Nigerians. Soyinka stated this, while speaking in Badagry on Saturday. It was his reaction to the earlier sealing off of the Lagos venue for a symposium where Soyinka, Femi Falana, and others were to speak on the security issues in the country.

9. Balarabe Musa, Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Peoples Redemption Party, PRP, has said that the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, was creating enemies for the South East in their push for 2023 presidency. Musa insisted that IPOB was making it difficult for an Igbo presidency to emerge in 2023.

10. Enyimba FC of Aba, yesterday booked their place in the next round of the CAF Champions League, after an emphatic 5-0 win over Rahimo FC of Burkina Faso in Aba on Sunday. A double brace from Reuben Bala and Stanley Dimgba, saw the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions progress to the first round of the CAF Champions League. However, Kano Pillars crashed out of the competition 4-3 on aggregate, after losing 2-0 to Asante Kotoko away on Sunday.
