1. Former Governor of Kaduna State, Senator Ahmed Makarfi has declared to run in the 2019 presidential election. Makarfi, the immediate past Caretaker Committee Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, made the declaration at a press briefing in Kaduna on Sunday. The two time Senator will run under the PDP.
2. Suspended National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Timi Frank, has told President Muhammadu Buhari that Nigerians may end up in regret and despair for voting him into office. Frank said this in an open letter he addressed to the President. In the letter, he said the ruling party said the president must do more in obeying the rule of law and stop attacking those he sees as opposition to his administration.
3. About 30 people have been feared dead following heavy windstorm in Bauchi metropolis and environs late Saturday. Among places mostly affected include Tirwun, Tudun Salmanu, Railway and Kandahar. The subsequent rainfall, which lasted several hours, forced Muslim Ummah celebrating Ed-el fitr to retire home for safety. Shops, domestic animals and businesses were affected in almost all the towns.
4. Hirving Lozano’s strike helped Mexico to beat defending champions, Germany, 1 – 0 in the ongoing World Cup in Russia. The first half saw a flurry of chances fall for both Germany and Mexico. However, it was Lozano’s perfectly taken shot that gave Mexico the lead in the 35th minute.
5. Elder statesman, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai has given reasons some members of the National Assembly will backpedal in the reported plan to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari. He said some of the lawmakers will need the help of the party and the support of their governors and the President in their bid to return for another, hence would not take part in the impeachment processes. He also said that Buhari was aware of the actions of the police against Saraki and is using the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Ibrahim Idris to trouble the Senate.
6. Report says there was confusion on Saturday in Wankya settlement of Zaki-Biam town, Ukum LGA of Benue State as gunmen suspected to be members of a wanted militia gang leader, Terwase Akwaza, otherwise known as Ghana, killed two persons and abducted another. The report claims that the killers invaded the area around 11.30pm with guns and broke into the homes of the victims.
7. A 22-year-old boy, Agaezichi Ogbonna has allegedly beaten his mother, Blessing, to death over his love affair with his sister at Akpaa Mbato community, Obingwa council area of Abia State. Report says the deceased reportedly met the two ‘love birds’ at home on Saturday and warned them to desist from the act, but Agaezichi pounced on his mother and beat her to death.
8. At least, two persons have been confirmed dead as heavy rainfall caused havoc in some parts of Delta State. Report says that over 70 houses were also completely destroyed by the disaster, which occurred at the Idumuesah community, Ika North East Local government area of the state early Sunday morning.
9. Report says that no fewer than 20 persons were on Sunday killed and 48 others injured in a massive explosion in Damboa, in Borno State. The Police Command had said that at the sound of the explosion, personnel of the Nigeria police and members of the civilian JTF mobilised to the scene, and discovered twenty dead bodies and 48 injured persons in a suspected terrorist attack.
10. Founder of the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, has been sentenced to one month in prison by a judge of an Owerri High Court in Imo State for disobeying the order of the court to appear before in a case in which he is plaintiff. Presiding Justice Kemakolam Ojiako made the order in the civil case, HOW/265/2013, between Uwazuruike (plaintiff) and Barr. Chigozie Iheama and others over a land dispute.
