Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Monday morning

1. Results of elections conducted at the two-day national convention of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, for national officers have emerged.

Among the confirmed elected officers were: Adams Oshiomhole, National Chairman, Niyi Adebayo, Deputy National Chairman (South), Lawal Shuaibu, Deputy National Chairman (North), Hillary Etegbo, Vice-Chairman (South-South), Emmanuel Eneukwu, Vice Chairman (South-East) and others.

2. No fewer than 86 persons have been killed in separate attacks on Gashish District of Barkin Ladi LGA of Plateau State, the police said.

It was gathered that the last 48 hours had witnessed several ambushes, guerrilla attacks and killings across several villages, notably in Gashish district where over 150 people are said to have been killed.

3. The Middle Belt Conscience Guard (MBCG) has attributed the ongoing crises in Plateau State to some selfish politicians who are hell bent on blackmailing the state government and President Muhammadu Buhari.

The group said some political players were only using the crisis to make the state and the country ungovernable ahead of the 2019 polls.

4. The Socio-Economic Right and Accountability Project has reacted to the public spat between the National Assembly and President Muhammadu Buhari over 2018 Budget allocations.

SERAP in a statement by its Executive Director, Adetokunbo Mumuni said there was no justifiable reason for alteration in the budget as presented by the President without National Assembly seeking clarifications from the executive.

5. Cholera outbreak at Tsangaya Islamic school, Madaki, in Gombe State, has led to the death of three pupils, while 27 others were hospitalised.

Gombe State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Kennedy Ishaya, confirmed the outbreak to newsmen in Gombe on Sunday during an inspection visit to Madaki Primary Health Care facility where the victims are hospitalized.

6. A former governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, has reacted to the emergence of former governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomole, as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, describing it as good for the party and Nigeria’s democracy.

Kalu stressed that Oshiomole’s antecedents in labour unionism will continue to speak volumes for him.

7. The governor of Imo state, Rochas Okorocha, has said the recent disagreement between the Executive and the Legislative arms of government, happened because the All Progressives Congress (APC) was a weak party.

Okorocha said the party has been very weak and inactive, hence the reason for the crisis between Executive and the National Assembly.

8. Suspected gunmen on Sunday invaded Bagiwa village in Mani Local Government Area of Katsina state killing two students of Al-Qalam University, Katsina.

The students: Ibrahim Bature, 22 year-old 400 level student, and Rabi’u Abubakar, 21 year-old 200 level student were killed alongside one who was kidnapped.

9. The Nigerian Air Force said it had deployed seven fighter jets and attack helicopters to Benue and Taraba states in an ongoing Operation Whirl Stroke, to tackle the herdsmen and farmers’ violence in the two states.

The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, said the deployed aircraft are two F-7 fighter jets, two Mi-35 helicopters, one ATR plane, one 350 King air surveillance aircraft and one Mi-35P helicopter.

10. Leicester City forward Ahmed Musa has vowed that the Super Eagles will beat Argentina in the last group match at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Musa said they are confident of defeating the South Americans after their decisive 2-0 win against Iceland on Friday in Volgograd.
