Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Monday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. All Progressives Congress National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has said that Senate President, Bukola Saraki and Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal among others left the APC because the party could not offer them what they wanted. He said the defectors wanted automatic tickets and sharing of the national wealth which the governing APC could not guarantee. He said this in a lengthy statement he personally signed, entitled “They Go Away Because We Go the Right Way”.

2. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Sunday welcomed President Muhammadu Buhari’s declaration to jail treasury looters, challenging him to start from the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Adams Oshiomhole and the sacked Director-General of the Department of State Services, DSS, Lawal Daura, and other chieftains of the APC.

3. Chairman, Senate Committee on Navy, Senator Isah Hamma Misau and his counterpart in the Committee on Banking, Finance and other Financial Institutions, Senator Rafiu Adebayo Ibrahim have advised the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its leaders to desist from looking for scapegoats for the failure by constantly blaming Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki.

4. The Third Lagos-Mainland Bridge will be shut for four days this week, commencing from midnight of August 23 to midnight of August 26, for investigative maintenance test. The Lagos State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Ade Akinsanya, explained that the decision was taken just to enable contractors to assess the true state of the bridge, after which work would commence by the end of the year or early 2019.

5. Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has blamed the Police for the suspension of Saturday’s Port Harcourt Constituency 3 bye-election. Governor Wike stated that the consistency with which the Police sabotages the electoral process in Rivers State amounts to a declaration of war on the people.

6. A 15-year-old girl, Oghenevwede Michael in the early hours of Sunday in Sapele, Delta State, allegedly committed suicide after she was thoroughly rebuked by her parents for having a boyfriend. Other sources, however, claimed that the girl took her own life upon the discovery that she was infected with a virginal disease. She allegedly drank a substance suspected to be insecticide, popularly known as “otapiapia”.

7. The Oyo state government on Sunday lived up to its threat by demolishing the Music House, a building owned by a popular Juju musician, Yinka Ayefele, in the early hours of the day. The building which is located along ChallengeToll Gate Express Way houses Ayefele’s radio station, Fresh FM, Ibadan. The building which Ayefele claimed was worth about 800 million Naira was demolished around 6 am.

8. Kano State Governor, Umar Ganduje has challenged his predecessor, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso to launch his presidential campaign in Kano. The Governor declared that the people of the state will vote en masse for President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019, saying the people have already rejected him.

9. No fewer than 1,650 members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, have dumped the ruling party in Edo State. The members, from the 12 wards of Oredo Local Government Area of the State, resigned their membership of the party on Sunday. The pointed out that they decided to resign their membership of the party because the “change mantra,” which was what brought them into the party had failed.

10. Two hundred and fifty-two Special Advisers and Special Assistants appointed under Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal’s administration in Sokoto State were on Sunday relieved of their appointment. The aides were sacked due to the recent political development in the state.
