Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Monday morning

1. No fewer than two thousand members of the All Progressive Congress, APC, have defected to the Peoples Democratic Party PDP in Otukpo, the

headquarters of Benue South Senatorial District, popularly known as Zone C.

This is happening less than two weeks after a large chunk of the APC members led by the National Commandant of the Nigeria Peace Corps, Amb. Dickson Akoh left the party to join the Social Democratic Party, SDP, as running mate to the governorship

candidate, Dr. Stephen Hwande.

2. Former President Dr Goodluck Jonathan, has extended his felicitations to President Muhammadu Buhari on the occasion of his 76th birthday.

Jonathan in a message he personally signed, thanked God for blessing President Buhari with the grace of a long life.

3. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has reacted to President Muhammadu Buhari’s remark that Nigeria’s economy was in a bad shape.

Abubakar said Buhari should vacate his post over his confession on the bad state of the country’s economy.

4. Former president, Olusegun Obasanjo and Chairman, Advisory Board of the First Intra-African Trade Fair holding in Cairo, Egypt, on Sunday lamented Nigeria’s failure to sign the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), despite its leadership role in the continent.

Obasanjo while speaking at the closing sessions of the first Intra Africa Trade Fair and Exhibitions titled “Conversation with former Nigerian president’’, made it clear that the rest of Africa countries was ready to proceed with the implementation of the pact without Nigeria.

5. The ruling All Progressive Congress, APC, has maintained that President Muhammadu Buhari will hand over power to an Igbo person in 2023.

The party urged Ndigbo to embrace the party.

6. Nigeria’s Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo on Sunday night left for Austria, to participate in the Africa-Europe High Level Forum with other African and European Heads of States and Government holding in Vienna, between Monday, December 17, and Tuesday, December 18.

Osinbajo would be speaking on the theme: ‘Taking cooperation to the digital age’ at the High-Level Forum, hosted by the Austrian government on behalf of the European Union and the African Union.

7. Access Bank has finally acquired Diamond Bank.

Reports said the official announcement of the transaction will be made in the course of the week by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

8. No fewer than 5000 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the weekend defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akure South Local Government Area of Ondo state.

Olusola Nenuwa, the leader of the defectors, said they decided to dump the APC because the ruling party had failed the people of the country.

9. Amb. Stuart Symington, U.S Ambassador to Nigeria, says there is need to diversify Nigeria’s economy towards pursuing deeper growth and development.

Symington, in a statement by Ebuka Ugochukwu, the Communication Manager, Nigerian-American Chamber of Commerce, on Sunday, said that Nigeria should reduce its dependence on crude oil.

10. The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has joined Nigerians and the rest of the world to felicitate with President Muhammadu Buhari as he celebrates his 76th birthday.

NANS’ National Public Relations Officer, Mr Bestman Okereafor, said that Buhari, who is also the Chairman of Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS), had displayed great commitment in repositioning Africa for growth and economic sustainability.
